‘End of an Era’ at Ocean Beach – Or Just a Lull?

in Ocean Beach

Here are pics that depict the “end of an era” in Ocean Beach – a time before many of the restrictions on the beach were lifted, before you could put your tush back on the sand – and perhaps the beginning of a new normal – getting back to surfing and being responsible on the beach and water – captured by Charles Landon the weekend of May 30.

But, is it the end of an era, or just a lull? Here’s hoping there’s not a second wave.

A sign of the times in the can.

There was an epidemic in the early 1970’s like 71 or 72 that a bunch of people died, but that was from heroin.

The expert medical people, like Dr. Mike Ryan, director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Program, are pretty much in agreement and saying what he said: “The director of the World Health Organization’s program overseeing health crises warned Tuesday that countries that rush to reopen their economies risk immediately causing a massive increase in coronavirus infections and deaths.”

Bluntly, the odds are very much against us that Part II of this very early period of the First Wave of this virus isn’t going to happen. This is just a lull. My retired biologist neighbor keeps telling me to wait and see what the world looks like by August.

If anybody else remembers what they learned history and science classes dealing with previous pandemics, or listens to the people who have spent their lives studying and fighting them in other parts of the world, we can expect the Second Wave to slam in about Oct/Nov. Roughly at the start of the usual flu season if it goes according to ‘normal’ behavior. Unfortunately we likely will still be dealing with Part II of the First Wave so…

Like 1918-1920 pandemic did, if their is a Third wave it will hit sometime in the next year to 18 months.

If you’ve got a lucky rabbit’s foot I suggest you keep rubbing it vigorously. Wear 4-leaf clovers, don’t walk under ladders or break a mirror, throw salt over your shoulder, and bluntly, keep distancing and wear a freaking mask. But then everybody I see in pictures or when I go to town are all acting like they’ve been listening to Donald Trump and “it will disappear like magic.”

And no, I do not enjoy reading what the people who know about these diseases are saying. As a matter of fact, they scare the hell out of me and I hope, DESPERATELY, that they are all completely and totally incorrect on their assessments in what is coming. But I never buy lottery tickets and don’t go to casinos….because the odds favor the house not me.
