The above SDU-T chart is from today, Friday, May 15, 2020, with the data good through Thursday, May 14. Compared with last week’s chart published Friday, May 8, with data good through the 7th, we can see the increases in total deaths, total cases and new positive cases. With increased testing, the numbers are bound to go up. Yet, in one week in San Diego County, there were 962 new cases of COVID-19 and 35 additional deaths.
The chart immediately below is from April 30. Between that week and last, there were 865 new cases and 41 deaths.
This next chart, below, is from April 20.
Chart below is from April 6. Remember the old days when total deaths in SD County were only in the double digits?

A few additional data points to keep in mind:
% positive has been reduced from about 6.3% at the end of April to 4.6% right now. So even with the number of cases reported, we’re actually seeing a lower percentage of positive results. To complement this data point, the number of new cases per day has dropped even with testing expanding by ~1000 per day in May.
ICU/Deaths curve has mostly flattened.

This is wildly misleading. The number of new cases, and new deaths is much more informative. I check the numbers everyday and it’s getting better. This is inflammatory journalism.
Hey Michael, Tyler gave us a link to data that supports his conclusion. You are apparantly looking at different data. I’d like to know what data you are checking everyday. Also please clarify if you meant to say flattening is better than growing, or did you mean that you see a reduction in some indicator ?
I agree with you that these graphs do not show the whole picture. Journalists try to reduce data to a volume the reader is willing to wade through. Anytime you reduce data you are editing it, and most likely introducing some sort of bias in your decision. I don’t know what the UT’s bias is these days, which is why I like the RAG. At least here the bias is pretty clear.
Of more concern- yet not being taken very seriously given recent comments in news reports:
Latinos are over-represented in COVID infections per 100K residents.
As of May 15:
Hispanic or Latino: 2,624 cases= 60.3% of those infected or 228 per 100K residents
Compare that to: White: 1,101 cases = 25.3% of those infected and only 72.2/100K residents
Note; Latinos are 33% of the population in San Diego County, yet 60% of the infections- so these rates are disproportionately high.
Other communities:
Black or African American 181 cases, 4.2% 122.5/100K residents
(Black/African Americans account for about 6% of county population)
Asian 352 cases, 8.1%, 96.7/100K residents
Pacific Islander 38 cases, 0.9%, 258.3/100K residents

Lyle, I was a newspaper boy for the Copley Press/San Diego Evening Tribune in 1968. It was a mouthpiece for the wealthy conservative owner class then and somehow I doubt very much it has changed much judging by the politics apparent in San Diego County now.
As for all this hullabaloo over testing, note:

Trump in Allentown, PA, on Thursday said: “We have the best testing in the world. Could be that testing is, frankly, overrated. Maybe it is overrated. But whenever they start yelling we want more, we want more. Then we do more and they say we want more. When you test, you have a case. When you test, you find something is wrong with people. If we didn’t do any testing we would have very few cases.”
Bluntly, no one has seen logic like this before. In fact, I’m not sure that any one ever thought logic like this was even possible. If it can even be classified as logic…
I wish somebody could get all of these clowns…uhhhh, leaders to sign, date, and have the document below notarized? Makes sense to me since the un-priviledged working class keeps getting told by these people that they are completely responsible for their actions…and the consequences. But they aren’t.
Let us see them put their money where their mouth is since, generally speaking, they all have a lot more of that than the 60% of the working population that don’t have $400 saved for an emergency because they live paycheck to paycheck…

Well, seal, we have something in common. I had a paper route in 1966 over in Coronado delivering that same rag. Got pretty good a flinging papers onto porches as I rode by on my bike.
And the state/city governments are so intimidated by the rightwing protests, they refuse to even require people to wear masks. Walk around the beach areas, at least half of the people don’t even have one on, or even with them. Who is profit before death really benefitting?
You don’t have to wear a mask unless you will be closer than six feet to another person. I see people walking alone or even in their cars alone wearing masks. Makes no sense. And, how do you know they don’t have a mask on them? I keep one in my pocket if I have to enter a place that requires one, I put it on, then take it off when I leave. Just because I’m not wearing the stupid thing around my neck doesn’t mean I don’t have one.
