Point Lomans: Nominate a Utility Box Near You for Beautification

Nominate Your Box!

The Point Loma Association has a great program. They have artists who beautify utility boxes – and they’ve been doing it for quite a few years.

Some of their artwork is stunning, indeed. Their artists have joined a long tradition on the Peninsula and Ocean Beach of painting utility boxes.

If you’ve seen some of the PLA artwork – or others – and said to yourself, ‘sure wish they’d do the one near my street ….’ now is the time to act.

The PLA does, as they say, “have scouts on the lookout for possible projects,” but they also encourage others to help them in choosing candidate boxes. And there are some “rules”, and here they are:

RULES OF THE ROAD

  • Utility boxes on main thoroughfares and in commercial districts are best possibilities. We (and the artists) like high visibility, naturally.
  • We seldom paint boxes in residential neighborhoods, unless specifically requested and paid for by donation.
  • All box candidates must be approved by the utility company.
  • We vet each one for expected longevity.

They also say they’ve been occasionally blind-sided when a recently beautified box meets its demise, as happened on Rosecrans at Nimitz last year.

So, they ask, “Please be on the lookout for unadorned utility boxes in high traffic areas. Note the address, attach a photo if you like, and get in touch with us. Thank you!” Here’s their contact link.

Would any of the artists consider painting my retaining wall? Do you know how I would contact them? Thanks!
