How the OB Rag arrived at our recommendations: First, this is not a consensus of the writers for the Rag; second, with a common sense approach, I took a look at our good friend Doug Porter’s recommendations, but also the recommendations of various organizations, like Indivisible San Diego, the San Diego Labor Council, Democratic Women, the County Democratic Party, also environmentally -oriented local Democrats, local Democrats for Equality, the League of Women Voters, the Democratic Socialists …. and then tried to fashion together the above. I had some differences with each of them, but agreed with most of all. For more details on all of these, go to Doug’s site here.

Thanks Frank, I began to sort thru my political mailers and my head was spinning, I really appreciate your time and effort.
For the 52nd I’m sorry you did not endorse Nancy Casady. She is a progressive running in support of the Green New Deal, Medicare for All and tuition free public colleges. Scott Peters supports none of these and has been lukewarm on environmental issues and climate change.
I know Nancy of course and she’s a fine environmentalist and has been for the green new deal for years. However, using common sense, Nancy will not defeat Peters, she’s a total unknown across the Congressional district and distracts from his battle against his GOP opponent in the General. I’m aware of Peter’s weaknesses – but he did come out fairly early for Trump’s impeachment. Part of being in a united front against trumpism is understanding what battles should be fought and won.
I think you are underestimating Nancy Casady, her issues are leading nationally, and she has garnered lots of support in the district. But aside from that your argument, for a primary election, assures continuing with the status quo, at best. And the status quo is dangerous this time. We are facing a planetary existential crises while many live with economic insecurity due to student debt and medical expenses. If folks don’t vote for the better candidate for fear they will lose, they will lose. If you think the better candidate isn’t getting enough recognition get out and work for them!!
Barbara – that’s bull shit. There is absolutely no evidence that shows Nancy has much support – or even name-recognition – in the district. Nancy is not going to win a seat in Congress. That is just common sense. If moderate Peters had a tough time winning this seat, what makes you think people in that district would vote for an 80-year old green new dealer? Of course Peters has a checkered history – that’s why we’ve been very critical of him for years. But we’re in a united front against authoritarianism. And he has taken stands against trumpism.
So, we are going “….with a common sense approach, … ”
Reminds me of the take-off on Kipling:
“IF YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HEAD WHILE ALL ABOUT YOU ARE LOSING THEIRS THEN YOU OBVIOUSLY DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT S GOING ON!”
Given what we know about Climate Disruption, maybe your idea of common sense isn’t the best approach when evaluating a candidate who doesn’t support the Green New Deal but does support more nuclear plants and is heavily invested in gas and oil.
Jon – see previous comment to Barbara, re no evidence of Casady support in district; Peter’s tough time winning the seat, his checkered career, etc. Just because someone is progressive does not automatically mean they’re entitled to the political office they’re seeking. Doesn’t work that way. That actually borders on elitism. They – like anyone who wants to serve electorally – must earn the respect from the potential constituents; ‘do their homework’. That’s a common sense approach. So you’re not advocating for a common sense approach to defeating trumpism? Oh, I see, you’re equating my argument with what Kipling was rebuking. Have you read anything on this website? Also, I don’t think Nancy has done much to build alliances in the district. I knew I would take some heat on this.
This must be what a caucus is like.
It looks like no comment on Measure D nor Prop 13. What is your position on those two?
What’s your opinion on Cory Briggs?
Please see this KPBS report on Briggs https://www.kpbs.org/news/2020/feb/27/judge-dismisses-suit-city-attorney-candidate-cory-/
dear editor,
Ballot measure C is City of San Diego, as is measure D.
Measures A and B are County-wide.
Thank you
Thanks for pointing that out.
Who is Pete Meisch? I can’t find anything on him and he is not registered with the State Bar, what gives?
Okay, misspelled his name; it’s Peter Mesich see this https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/cityattorney2020
I had not heard his name so I was wondering if it was a joke because it said “protest vote.” But, I just did my ballot and saw the correct spelling and looked him up. I did recognize his picture. But what about Briggs? Why not him?
I’m tempted to support Briggs if only so he’ll stop emptying the city coffers into his pockets with his lawsuits and fabricated plaintiffs. He’s made a career out of it. If you can’t beat em, join em.
Thank you for the recommendation. Although listed as a protest vote, Ocean Beach has always been a special place for me. I am a regular and Margaritas, and afternoon ice creams at the Lighthouse. With two master degrees and my law degree, 17 years practicing law, and experience in City Attorney’s Office both civil and criminal law (defense and prosecution) I am also the most qualified candidate. Without making promises that can’t be kept, or arguing with other city leaders, I will look to work with other city officials for viable solutions to Ocean Beach’s most serious problems- compassionate homeless policies, short term vacation rental reform, affordable housing, and transportation infrastructure. Again, thank you.
