February 13th Thursday 7 pm. Film Night. “Inhabit: A Permaculture Perspective”
Inhabit is a 2015 documentary introducing permaculture: a design method that offers an ecological lens for solving issues related to agriculture, economics, governance, and on. The film presents a vast array of projects, concepts, and people, and it translates the diversity of permaculture into something that can be understood by an equally diverse audience. For those familiar, it will be a call to action and a glimpse into what’s possible – what kind of projects and solutions are already underway. For those unfamiliar, it will be an introduction to a new way of being and a new way of relating to the Earth. For everyone, it will be a reminder that humans are capable of being planetary healing forces.

The Symposium is timed to be after the State of the Union, State, and City addresses to shine a light on conservation and biodiversity, a topic that is discussed all too infrequently in these public addresses. The symposium will feature a keynote presentation by Todd Keeler-Wolf entitled California-Style Biodiversity: Why We Wonder, Worry, and Hope. It will be followed by four concurrent panel sessions: San Diego Canyon Conservation, Habitat Conversation Plans (HCPs) for Conservation and Discovery, Biodiversity and Human Health, and Implications of Black-Market Biodiversity. Within these sessions, we will cover topics including but not limited to ecological disruptions in canyons, new species discovery, the importance of corridors and connectivity in the context of HCPs, the benefits of outdoor experiences on children’s mental health and recovery, illegal trade and smuggling of plants and animals, and violence against conservation advocates. The State of Biodiversity Symposium is open to anyone and everyone in hopes of bringing together conservationists, land managers, scientists, and the interested public to facilitate necessary interdisciplinary conversations about our region’s ecological condition in the wake of climate change and a variety of other human impacts. Dr. Bruce Bekkar’s local environmental efforts began in 1991, when he helped found the first local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation in San Diego. Since 2005, he has focused on the threats posed by climate change- specifically, risks to human health and our oceans. He left his medical practice in 2013 to work full-time on these issues, and currently serves on the Board of San Diego’s Climate Action Campaign and the Executive Committees of the North San Diego Chapter of Climate Reality and TAG Indivisible. Recently, he was Vice-Chair of Del Mar’s Sea Level Rise Advisory Committee, the spokesperson for Surfrider’s S.T.O.P. climate change initiative, and he has traveled to the State Capitol with the American Lung Association to lobby with the Doctors for Climate Health. As a 2015 graduate of Al Gore’s Climate Reality Leadership Corps program, he co-leads their Health Issues community and mentors at U.S. trainings. She will examine the nature of Israel’s presence in the world, beginning with its claim to be the “only democracy in the Middle East” vs its reality as an apartheid nation. What are the roles Israel has assumed beyond colonizing Palestine in terms of Israel’s relationships to other nations, to the natural world, and to history? In November 2018, Israeli authorities barred her entry at Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion Airport and prevented her from participating in panel discussions at a literature festival in Ramallah and Jerusalem. She was detained for 32 hours, many of them spent in an Israeli jail cell, as she appealed the decision. An Israeli court upheld her deportation.
Susan Abulhawa is a Palestinian American writer and political activist. She is the author of a novel, Mornings in Jenin, and the founder of a non-governmental organization, Playgrounds for Palestine. She lives in Yardley, Pennsylvania. Q&A discussion will follow the video.
