From Springboard West:

The Springboard West Music Festival is returning to Ocean Beach this week – January 9 through January 11 – and it’s all about providing aspiring musicians the opportunity to pitch their music to industry professionals plus it brings music lovers an event in what feels like a grassroots “American Idol” or South by Southwest.

The conference begins on January 9 with a two-day Band Bootcamp — an opportunity for emerging artists from all over the U.S. to take the stage and showcase their talents in front of veterans and professionals in the music industry — followed by intimate, VIP unplugged performances.

The event ends on Saturday, January 11 with a Band & Brew Crawl, a full-day celebration that brings together all participating bands and solo artists on five stages across Ocean Beach. This portion of the festival is open to the general public.

Forty bands and solo artists selected for this year’s festival were handpicked from more than 3,000 acts who submitted applications and examples of their music. Bands performing can walk away with a new mentor, song for a movie, partnership with another band to begin a tour or who knows, perhaps a record deal.

All proceeds go to the event’s partners including Sustainable Artists, San Diego Music Foundation, Pioneer Programs and the Autism Tree Project Foundation.

Emerging artists descend on Ocean Beach for Springboard West

By Lucia Viti / Downtown News / Jan. 3, 2020

Springboard West 2020 – a music festival, band bootcamp and beer crawl – returns to Ocean Beach to celebrate some of the world’s finest musical talent Jan. 9-11.

Founder and Director Barry Coffing will showcase some of the most talented – and undiscovered – musicians in front of the industry’s top executives as a way to discover, give back and celebrate the future of music.

Crossing all music genres, this nonprofit, sustainable arts venture isn’t about “making money.” Mentors devote their time as advisors while searching for musical phenoms as 40 musical ensembles – including seven San Diego bands – perform through the event’s “springboard effect” to launch careers that otherwise may never materialize.

Coffing, a music industry phenomenon, remains determined to help other bands “break through,” while sidestepping the “mistakes” he made.
