OBcean Tracy Dezenzo Appointed to Arts & Culture Commission for District 2
Tracy Dezenzo, who is on the OB Planning Board and is its secretary, was just appointed by the Mayor and City Council to the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture to represent District 2. Its 15 unpaid volunteers, all appointed by Council members. According to the City, the “Commission for Arts and Culture serves in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and City Council on promoting, encouraging and increasing support for the region’s artistic and cultural assets, integrating arts and culture into community life and showcasing San Diego as an international tourist destination.”
Tracy told the OB Rag, ” I applied for a seat almost a year ago but there wasn’t a seat available at the time and then about a month later the D2 rep resigned and I got a call, went for an interview with Jen [Campbell] and she selected me. It was really serendipitous. Then I had to wait for the Mayor’s office – which took the longest time and I seriously thought it was never going to happen. Low and behold, I got an email on Monday Dec. 12th asking me to be sworn in on Tuesday the 13th.” Which she was. Tracy also said, “it will be nice to have an OBcean on this commission since I think this district is lacking in the public art sector. Any publicity we can bring to OB is great!”
Point Loma House Gets Hit for Third Time in 15 Years
A driver suspected of being under the influence struck two parked vehicles, a fence and a tree before coming to a stop just feet from the front of a Point Loma home. A family was inside their home on Worden Street when they heard a crash coming from outside at around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday. When they went outside, they saw a white, badly damaged SUV in front of their house and a trail of destruction. The SUV struck a parked vehicle, knocking it about 30 feet across the street, and hit several trees and a fence. The family’s BMW in the driveway was also hit by the driver’s SUV.
The parked BMW prevented the SUV from striking a bedroom and a nativity scene. One family member told 10News that the driver appeared “out of it” and added, “She said she was drunk. She said, ‘Why do I keep doing that to myself? Why?’” Paramedics arrived to treat the driver and took her to UC San Diego Medical Center. 10News learned she was going to be evaluated for DUI. Family members said this was the third time a vehicle crashed into their front yard in the 15 years they’ve lived at the house. 10News
Joanne Newgard Recognized for Her Work With Homeless Youth
In 2016, Joanne Newgard started as a volunteer at Doors of Change in Ocean Beach — an outreach program that has been transforming the lives of homeless youth for 18 years, placing over 1,900 young people in safe housing. Newgard, who earned a master’s of social work, had wanted to work with adolescent youth and young adults. She considered law school, but instead worked as director of client service for a New York mutual fund for 25 years. When it was time for a change, she decided to follow her heart. With maturity, life experience and more realistic expectations about changing the world, she became the program director for the award-winning “Taking Music & Art to the Streets” (TMATS) at Doors of Change. In the 2 ½ years since, 1,800 homeless youth have participated in TMATS, 90 have been placed in safe housing, and 39 have found jobs under her leadership. SanDiegoUnion-Tribune
Midway District to Be New Home for Independent Bookstore Mysterious Galaxy
An independent bookstore, Mysterious Galaxy, specializing in science fiction, fantasy, mystery, young adult, romance, and horror, will be moving to the Midway District in the new year. The store, currently located in Clairemont, will move to the corner of Rosecrans Street and Midway Drive. Mysterious Galaxy has been a destination bookstore for local and international customers for 27 years. It offers a curated selection of genre fiction and hosts author and community events each week. The new owners, Matthew Berger and Jennifer Marchisotto plan to continue offering Mysterious Galaxy’s myriad literary events while expanding their children’s literature section and partnering with local schools to develop new educational programs. Peninsula Singers Searching for Singers for Spring Season
The Peninsula Singers community choir welcomes singers with all levels of experience to join them for the spring season, which starts Monday, Jan. 13 2020. No audition is needed. Rehearsals are every Monday night, 5:30-7:30 p.m., beginning January 13, in the community room at Point Loma Hervey Branch Library at 3701 Voltaire Street.
Interested singers can visit www.peninsulasingerssandiego.org for more information and to register online. Registration is also available at the first few rehearsals. The choir is directed by Sarah Suhonen and accompanied by Stewart Simon on piano.
Peninsula Singers has performed at many venues throughout the community, including U.S.S. Midway, the Point Loma Village Cultural Faire, Southwestern Yacht Club, Point Loma High School, several local libraries, “December Nights” in Balboa Park and the San Diego Botanical Garden. Established in 2003, Peninsula Singers is a Committee of the nonprofit 501(c)3 Ocean Beach Community Foundation.

Suspect in Homeless Serial Killings to Go to Trial
A June 1 trial date was set Wednesday for a man accused of attacking more than a half-dozen mostly homeless victims in San Diego neighborhoods in 2016, resulting in four deaths. Jon David Guerrero, 42, is facing 15 felony counts, including murder, arson, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, stemming from the spree of attacks that occurred over about a five-month span in 2016. Prosecutors have yet to decide whether to pursue capital punishment against Guerrero, who also faces a special circumstance allegation of committing multiple murders. The trial is expected to last around four weeks at the downtown San Diego courthouse. Guerrero’s case has been delayed by numerous mental competency proceedings and multiple stays at Patton State Hospital. He was deemed mentally competent to stand trial in June. Fox 5
Scripps’ Buoy to Study Del Mar Bluffs Has OB and Point Loma Connections
Scientists at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography just received a major new tool in trying to decipher the patterns of erosion eating away at the crumbling Del Mar bluffs, atop which passenger trains regularly run up and down the coast. A team from the Coastal Data Information Program at Scripps recently deployed one of the world’s most sophisticated buoys for measuring waves. Among other things, the device will record the height and direction of ocean waves about a mile off the city’s receding coast, providing real-time data to everyone from scientists to surfers. Road Rage Incident in Point Loma Involved Hammer Assault
A dispute between drivers near a Point Loma Heights intersection ended when one of the drivers hit a passenger in the head with a hammer, then drove off, police said Monday, Dec. 9. The incident started around 5:50 p.m. Sunday when an SUV driver cut another driver off near the intersection of Famosa and West Point Loma boulevards, according to San Diego police. Both drivers pulled over and started arguing, then the pickup driver emerged with a hammer and a male passenger in the other vehicle got out to confront him, SDPD Officer John Buttle said. The suspect struck the man in the head, then the other driver got a crowbar from the trunk of his vehicle and hit the suspect’s windshield as he drove off, Buttle said. Patch San Diego
44th Annual Nicky Awards at Liberty Station
It was an exciting night of prestigious honors attended by San Diego’s distinguished LGBT community leaders. It was another dazzling night of fun, community revelry and wonderful surprises at the 44th Annual Nicky Awards that took place Sunday night Dec. 8 at Point Loma’s Courtyard Marriot Liberty Station. Attendees were dressed to the nines and posed for photos at the step and repeat before the ceremony got started. Statuettes were handed out to the nominees who won in their categories via online ballots. San Diego Gay and Lesbian News and SDPIX, both published by Hale Media won Best Online Publication and Best Publication respectively. Johnathan Hale who owns both publications was also honored along with Stefan Chicote for their work on the Hillcrest Pride flag. Stefan Chicote was presented with one of the retired Pride Flags for advocating the concept of the Hillcrest Pride flag to the Hillcrest Business Association. And Johnathan Hale was presented with the original Pride flag first flown on July 20, 2012, For his leadership in fundraising for the project. SDGLN
