The Ocean Beach Planning Board appealed the city’s Dog Beach ADA Ramp “Improvement” Project. This appeal goes before the City Council on Tuesday, November 19, at 2pm.
Readers are familiar with this story. It is true that the OB Planning Board “is going toe-to-toe with the City of San Diego” over the city’s plans to spend $1.1 million upgrading an accessibility ramp onto Dog Beach in OB. The OB Rag has been covering the issue since it appeared before OB planners in early August (see our report here) and was shot down with a 12-1-1 to vote, and our writer, Geoff Page, examined the issues involved and came up with this conclusion:
The important result of seeing the actual lawsuit is that the current city design does not have to happen – it can be changed as there is nothing legally preventing the city from doing something different.
What the city needs to do is provide the access along the top of the jetty, the path the plaintiff tried to follow. The existing design leaves a wheelchair bound person stuck in the middle of the sand a hundred yards away from the ocean sitting on a bench. Whoever designed this originally should have their head examined. The city does not need to spend $1.1 million on a sidewalk to nowhere.
Planning Board leaders are asking folks to come down to the City Council hearing on OB’s appeal to give support. Take the money you nim-wits! They will spend it elsewhere!
The leadership of the OB Planning Board will be at the hearing and they will send us any important updates – so stay tuned.
Uh, can’t they fix all the frickin’ stairs and other broken, beach-access points first? Not dissin’ access for everyone to the shore, per ADA etc., but these other areas in OB have been broken and rubbled for years…let’s get those finally addressed first before more concrete gets laid at Dog Beach….

Does anyone in the city with a brain wonder how a few tons of poured cement costs this much? At the risk of sounding inconsiderate, give the plaintiff $100,000 and save a million dollars, and use $100,000 of it to tear out what is there now.
