October 10th Thursday 7 pm.  Film Night “The Human Element” People are finally waking up to the climate crisis as our young people take to the streets.  We are showing  yet another intense film about the crisis but with hope at the end.  In this 2019 documentary from the producers of Racing Extinction, The Cove and Chasing Ice, environmental photographer James Balog captures the lives of everyday American on the front lines of climate change.

During his four-decade career as a photographer and explorer, James Balog has focused his lens on the complex relationship between humans and nature. Human activity has now surpassed all other forces shaping our world. Balog’s work has challenged us to contemplate our place in, and responsibility to, the natural world. Balog argues that humans are part of the whole system of nature and not apart from it. Knowing this, he finds great hope that the fifth element, the human element, can bring the whole system back into balance. Free of charge

October 11th Friday 6:30 pm – Sierra Club Film night “Inequality for All”  8304 Clairemont Mesa Blvd #101, San Diego 92111,
Recipient of a special award at its premier at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, this documentary explores the effects of income inequality, not only on the U.S. economy, but also on American democracy itself.  Robert Reich, author, professor at U.C. Berkley, and former official in three administrations, including U.S. Secretary of Labor, narrates this film and discusses, in clear and accessible language, the issues related to the ever-widening wealth gap.  Professor Reich has studied, spoken about, and written about the topic of inequality for nearly thirty years.  At the heart of this problem is a simple question: What constitutes a good society, and what role does the widening income gap play in the deterioration of the Nation’s economic health? October 26th Saturday 11 am – 6:30 pm Politifest Housing and Transportation Summit 2019 University of San Diego 5998 Alcala Park San Diego 92110. No greater challenge faces the San Diego region – and California in general – than the cost of living here. Rents are soaring and the concept of buying a home is unfathomable to many residents. But the economy is booming, jobs are being created and babies are being born, both of which drive up the demand for homes. This affects everything. The economy, quality of life, health care, education and the environment. If people can’t afford to live in our cities, it will cripple local economies for decades. Housing is intricately connected to transportation and San Diego leaders have touched off a major, if not historic debate about the future of transit and highways in the region.  More info:  https://www.facebook.com/events/430204717824311/
