Newport Pizza to Close
Sadly, we hear that the 35-year-old business on Newport Avenue, Newport Pizza and Ale House, at 5050 Newport, is set to close. They always had great pizza slices and good craft beer. A very popular place for locals and tourists alike. Frank and Shirlee Owen owned the property for years but we understand their son is now taking over managing the property. We don’t know why the place is closing or what the owner’s plans are. We also don’t know if the Newport Pizza owners still have a stake in the OB Brewery across the street. We’re work on finding all this out. Stay tuned. And grab a pizza slice before they’re gone.
Dirty Birds Has Opened
The grill and sports bar at the corner of Cable and Santa Monica has finally opened after an epic battle around their liquor license. They had applied for a full license but got cut down by the ABC, who apparently has granted them a beer and wine license.
Lazy Hummingbird to Close October 6
One of OBceans’ fave coffee house is closing. The Lazy Hummingbird at 4876 Santa Monica opened in 2011 – but now they’ve announced their last day is October 6th.
They are having a closing sale of all their CBD product (healing oil for 30% off). Their La Mesa storefront also closed in August.
We do hope they find a place local.
People’s Restaurant Space for Lease
The former space of the OB Garden Cafe is now up for lease, according to sources within People’s Food, the owner. And depending on the market for eatery sites, whoever moves in may not be a veggie place. The former cafe did have a beer and wine license, so that’s a plus for budding and bidding entrepreneurs.
OB’s Bookstore, Run for Cover, Celebrates First Anniversary
Join the folks at OB’s only bookstore, Run for Cover, at their October 5th celebration of their first anniversary. It’s at 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm at 4912 Voltaire Street.
In Case You Missed It, Another Mayoral Debate on Oct. 6
On Sunday, October 6 the public is invited to attend a San Diego Mayoral Forum, featuring Barbara Bry, Todd Gloria, and Tasha Williamson. Come hear the candidates’ plans for San Diego on a range of topics including, but not limited to affordable housing, transportation, climate change, and livable neighborhoods. The candidates will compete in the California Top Two Primary on March 3, 2020. The two candidates winning the most votes will face off in the November 3, 2020 General Election.
12 Years for Causing Fatal Crash on OB Freeway
Lauren Ashley Freeman, 24, was sentenced to nearly 12 years for the crash that killed Justin Callahan, who was on his way home from work. Superior Court Judge Runston Maino sentenced her to 11 years, eight months in state prison. Freeman, originally charged with murder, pleaded guilty in July to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury. SDU-T
OB’s Oktoberfest Coming Oct. 11-12
The 15th annual OB Oktoberfest with beer garden, live music and contests is approaching its due date: Oct. 11-12 and it’s on Newport Avenue and Abbott Street in Ocean Beach. It kicks off Friday the 11th with a 21-and-over beer garden from 4 p.m. to midnight and live music featuring Jose Sinatra. It continues Saturday, Oct. 12, in the grassy area at the foot of Newport Avenue with food, merchandise booths and a beachside stage featuring musicians from Rock & Roll San Diego. Festivities continue at 11 a.m. when the Beer Garden in the pier parking lot opens with exciting contests and live entertainment.
The Brew Fest will take place Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. featuring local breweries including OB Brewery, Belching Beaver, Culture Brewing Co., Hodad’s Brewing Co., Kilowatt Brewing, Mike Hess Brewing Co., Pizza Port, Two Roots Brewing Co., and Bay City Brewing Co. Each brewery will feature one style of beer. Admission to the beer garden is $5 and supports the OB community. A ‘fast pass’ ticket is available for $20 and includes entry plus two drink tickets. It’s all sponsored by Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, Hoy Hoy Boys and The Peninsula Alliance. Arson Team Looking at Video for Arsonist Who Set OB and PL Fires
Neighbors in Ocean Beach and Point Loma are hoping new surveillance video will help arson investigators find whomever is responsible for a series of fires over the weekend. The video was taken from a yard near one of the fires. It shows a man walking in and out of frame then moments later, neighbors say, another fire stared. The fires all happened early Saturday morning within hours and just miles of each other. Arson investigators are calling the fires suspicious , all of them started in people’s backyards. San Diego Police are still working to find out if the fires are related and also looking at the surveillance video to find out if the man in the video is a suspect. Detectives ask that anyone else with video, turn it over to the department. 10News

Young Man Stabbed in the Midway, Mother Has Panic Attack – Both Hospitalized
A 25-year-old man was stabbed Friday September 27 outside a storage facility in the Midway District, then driven by his mother to a parking lot nearby to meet with police and paramedics. Police responded to the parking lot and found the 25-year-old man suffering from at least one stab wound to his abdomen. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, but an update on the man’s condition was not immediately available. The victim’s mother was also taken to a hospital when she was reported to be suffering a panic attack, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Officers searching near the 4300 block of Pacific Highway located a male suspect and detained him for questioning. Detectives with the San Diego Police Department’s western division were investigating the circumstances leading up to the stabbing. Patch San Diego

Whoops! Initially said “Dirty Dogs” – sorry about that – instead of “Dirty Birds.” The Dirty Dogs was a Point Loma High football team I was on as a sophomore, whose members met early in the morning and scrammed occasionally with the regular teams. We weren’t good enuff to be on the regular teams – unless we proved ourselves early in the season. But we were tough and dirty – especially first period.
Dirty Birds’ beer and wine license is still pending and under protest. They were issued an interim operating license through 1/10/2020.
KInda shitty on the part of the protesters at this point if they still want to deny a beer and wine license after their victory to not grant a full liquor license. So they’re ok with a now opened business to just go under?
The license was protested within the 30 day period it was applied for. That’s how the protest mechanism works. The owners chose to take the risk and proceed with the construction anyways despite not having the license sorted out. It’s up to the discretion of ABC and SDPD as the number of existing licenses is well beyond the maximum allowed. Had they bought an existing license (ie Bravos) they would not be in this situation.
So, we lose Newps 35 years and in return we get Dirty Birds? This is the worst trade deal in the history of trade deals, maybe ever!!
It sucks that Newps closing (and I’ll miss it) but it has absolutely noting to do with Dirty Bird’s. Personally, I like DB’s and am glad there’s one in OB now. To each his/her own.
From SD U-T: SUNSET CLIFFS —
A man who fell from Sunset Cliffs on Sunday evening was reportedly uncooperative while lifeguards worked to rescue him, police said.
The man, suspected of being under the influence, fell around 7:30 p.m. near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Monaco Street, officials said.
Lifeguards located the man with help from a police helicopter but had to summon extra lifeguards when the man refused to cooperate with them, police said. Crews managed to use a crane to hoist him to safety.
The man was taken to a hospital with possible major injuries. He wouldn’t tell paramedics how far he had fallen, so they took him to a trauma facility as a precaution, officials said.
