Kroger and Albertsons Workers Ratify New Contract That Raises Hourly Wages, Improves Benefits, and Protects Customer Service – All With Strong Customer Support
This week, members of the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) from Ralphs, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions voted overwhelmingly in favor of a new contract that improves the lives of hard-working grocery workers and their families across Southern California.
Marc Perrone, the President of the UFCW International, released the following statement:
“By strongly voting for a new contract that improves wages and benefits, thousands of hard-working members of the UFCW sent a powerful message this week about the power that comes from workers and customers standing together.
“This contract not only rewards hard work, it provides affordable healthcare, strong pensions, and critical benefits that ensure our UFCW members are able to build the better life they’ve earned. For the millions of customers our members serve, this contract ensures that the high-quality service and food they depend on will continue for years to come.”
Background:
A total of 47,000 Southern California grocery workers represented by UFCW Local Unions 8GS, 324, 135, 770, 1167, 1428, and 1442, have been standing together to protect their health care, secure better wages, and improve customer service since contract negotiations started on March 5, 2019.
A Tentative Agreement was reached on Sunday, September 8 and all seven local unions held contract ratification votes that concluded last night. The democratic process for contract negotiations requires members of all seven of the southern California UFCW Local Unions that have been negotiating the terms of a new three-year contract with parent employers Kroger and Albertsons, to vote on whether or not to accept the terms of the agreement before contracts are official.
The new contracts achieve the following:
- Health & Welfare: All workers will continue to have access to affordable & quality healthcare
- Pensions: All pensions will be maintained and fully funded
- Wages: All workers will have guaranteed wage increases that ensure their pay surpasses the state’s minimum wage
The UFCW represents 16,000 Kroger workers in California; more than 56,000 Kroger workers in Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, and Memphis, Tennessee; and more than 72,000 Albertsons workers in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Utah.
