People’s Cafe Has Closed
OB People’s organic cafe on Voltaire Street has closed. The O.B. Garden Café, at 4741 Voltaire, just opened their doors in mid-December 2017. Then last summer, the eatery was nominated for an Orchid in San Diego’s annual Orchids & Onions contest. But the fact remains, the doors are now closed – and we don’t know for how long.
San Diego Second Most Popular City, Says Airbnb – OB 5th Most Popular in SD
San Diego was the second most popular California destination for Airbnb hosts. Airbnb said Monday that San Diego County hosts earned a combined $112 million in supplemental income, welcoming about 482,400 guests from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. In the City of San Diego alone, hosts earned about $75 million and saw 345,000 guests. Once in town, the most popular neighborhoods Airbnb guests visited were Pacific Beach (first), Mission Beach (second), East Village (third), North Park (fourth), and Ocean Beach (fifth), Airbnb says. Port Hears More from Point Lomans on Master Plan; List of Changes Made
Monday night, Sept. 16, Port Commissioners once again heard from Point Loma residents about the Master Plan for the Port of San Diego. This time, lists were made. The Commissioners – after listening to the public comment, made the following recommendations to staff, for the Shelter Island Planning District:
- No new hotel rooms on Shelter Island, move them to Harbor Island
- 30-foot height limit, consistent with City of San Diego height limit
- Keep Marlin Club at current location
- La Playa Piers – keep piers the way they are; open to the public with gangways and floating docks to remain private
- La Playa Yacht Club – no perimeter walkway, pursue other methods to provide public access to the area
- Scott Street – no reconfiguration
- Add clarifying language:
- While it was never the Port’s intent to build a restroom on the La Playa Trail or at the trailhead, add language to clarify that no restrooms will be built
- Clarify the Port’s intent for the La Playa Trail to maintain it in its natural state
- Clarify the Port’s intent to maintain and protect current maritime uses
Port staff will bring a revised proposal back to the table in six months, giving the public another opportunity to weigh in. 10News
OB Stabbing Suspect Arrested
A 41-year-old man was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of stabbing a 36-year-old man in the neck, police said. The stabbing happened around 5:20 a.m. near the intersection of Cable Street and Saratoga Avenue, San Diego police Sgt. Robert Hawkins said. The 36-year-old man and his girlfriend confronted the 41-year-old man, a former friend, then they began fighting and the assailant stabbed the younger man in the neck with an unknown object, Hawkins said. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, the sergeant said. Police found the older man nearby and took him into custody after witnesses identified him as the assailant, Hawkins said, adding that the man’s name was not immediately available. San Diego Patch
Save SD Neighborhoods Endorses Barbara Bry for Mayor
Save San Diego Neighborhoods has endorsed Councilwoman Barbara Bry to be San Diego’s next mayor. “San Diego is in the midst of a major housing crisis with no end in sight. Short-term rentals are worsening this crisis and driving up housing costs for all San Diego residents. When I am Mayor, I will enforce the existing zoning laws that prohibit short-term rentals, and I will work to preserve housing for whom it was intended — hard working San Diego residents,” Barbara Bry, stated recently. Save San Diego Neighborhoods Chair, Ronan Gray said, “Barbara Bry understands the negative impact short-term rentals have on San Diego’s housing supply —driving up San Diego’s already astronomical housing costs. She understands that the conversion of residential dwellings to short-term rentals is a violation of law, and that Mayor Faulconer’s refusal to enforce the law is both a failure of governance and a fundamental breach of the public trust.”
Rescued Pilot Whales Begin New Life at SeaWorld
Three rescued short-finned pilot whales, given a second chance at life at SeaWorld Orlando, arrived at SeaWorld San Diego today. “We’re more than thrilled and honored to welcome these pilot whales to their new San Diego home,” said Wendy Ramirez, curator of dolphins and pilot whales. “We have a team of trainers focused on each whale to help to them acclimate to their new environment. We’ve even brought some of their favorite toys from Orlando. We couldn’t be more excited to have them join our San Diego family.” Ace, Ava and Piper, the only surviving pilot whales from a mass stranding event near Fort Pierce, Fla. in 2012, were rescued and were rehabilitated at SeaWorld Orlando. The National Marine Fisheries Service ultimately determined the whales could not be returned to the ocean as they were dependent calves at the time of their rescue and would be unable to survive on their own in the wild. Friends and Surfing Buddies Say ‘Good-Bye’ to Billy Holt
Dozens of old friends and surfing pals of Billy Holt gathered at the foot of Newport to say “good-bye” – he had passed away unexpectedly in July. Many of the people at the memorial – organized by Point Loma High class of 1966 members David Allaire and Tim Wilson – were classmates of Holt in high school.

Billy was a member of the “Garage No. 3” group of surfing buddies back in the Sixties – all part of the wave of early OB and Point Loma 1960s young surfers who helped mold and develop the sport. After the service, flowers were thrown into the Pacific by his friends in his memory, and then a party was held at Holt’s favorite watering hole, South Beach Bar & Grill.
Point Loma Library is 16 Years Old
Sept. 18 is the 16th anniversary of the Point Loma/Hervey Library. At 6:30 p.m. the band The Chimpos will perform. They are set to release another album soon. There will be refreshments served to celebrate.
OBTC Announces Dates for Craft Fairs
The Ocean Beach Town Council has announced the dates for the Craft Fair as Sept. 21, Sept. 28, Oct. 5, Oct. 25, Nov. 16, Nov. 30, Dec. 7, Dec. 14 and Dec. 21. The Craft Fair will be held on the grass of the Veterans Plaza and will feature local craft vendors, a “Kid’s Corner” with activities and more. City Has Handbook for Building Granny Flats
The City teamed up with the San Diego Housing Federation, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and the Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors (PSAR) to write the “Companion Unit Handbook,” a guide to help homeowners navigate the process of constructing a companion unit (granny flat) on their property. The handbook explains: a property’s zoning, and issues such as setbacks and parking; companion unit design and construction; permitting requirements; funding; supporting documents and resources. “Bossman” Day on Sept. 30 at OB Pier Parking Lot
Mark Hardin’s parents opened the first Hodad’s at the foot of Santa Monica in 1969. Mike took it over and eventually moved the eatery to Newport Avenue. So, the 50th annivesary of the restaurant and a celebration of Mike’s birthday is all happening on Monday, Sept. 30 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at OB Pier parking lot. Festivities will include live bands, food, a skateboard ramp, brews, booths and a kids zone. Check this out: Mayor Faucloner is supposed to come and proclaim the day as Bossman Day in the City. There will be 10 different bands playing, beer gardens with Hodad’s own brews, a bouncy house and skate ramps and some vendor booths – all for a $10 entry fee and once inside, Hodad’s brews and sliders will be available for $5.
Murder Suspect Also Charged With Midway Robbery
A murder suspect has also been ordered to stand trial for robbing an adult video store in the Midway area the night before the homicide occurred in another robbery that was eerily similar. Evidence was presented during a two-day preliminary hearing for Kevin Eugene Cartwright, 52, about the slaying of Ghedeer “Tony” Radda, 51, in a robbery at Bottom Price Flooring at 1015 G St. in downtown San Diego on Oct. 10, 2018. OB’s TV Detectives in “Terrier’s” Should Have Had a 2nd Season … and More
The author of this article is “upset all over again” . In September 2010, FX debuted its quirky drama Terriers, about a pair of underdog private investigators in the San Diego area. Starring Donal Logue as Hank Dolworth and Michael Raymond-James as Britt Pollack, Terriers built a strong cult following and garnered tons of critical praise. However, after suffering from significantly low ratings, Terriers was canceled on December 6, 2010—a few days after the Season 1 finale aired. Even though the cancellation was rumored as the season came to an end, it still hurt when the announcement was made. Rewatching nine years later, I was struck once again with a sense of sadness that Terriers was never given a chance to grow past a single season. 25YL
