Long-time OBcean and the community’s resident-ecologist, Jim Bell, has passed.
Friends say he passed away peacefully Friday, August 2 at his home. Jim Bell has left the planet.
Here’s a statement from our friends at the OB Green Center:
In the last year we have periodically talked about our friend and mentor, Jim Bell, who graciously provided a new home for the Ocean Beach Green Center. Jim peacefully passed away this morning at his home. We had a party for him at his home and the Green Center’s home several weeks ago.
For those of you who didn’t know Jim, he was a great visionary and a dedicated environmentalist who had been talking about sustainability for over 40 years. [Jim Bell has a website but there is currently a problem with it at this writing.]
We, at the Green Center, will try to continue his legacy by supporting and promoting his vision of making the San Diego/ Tijuana bioregion energy, water and food self-sufficient.
A big thanks goes to Dustin, Jim’s friend, who got Jim home and saved his house from development. Thank you also for all the wonderful caregivers Jim had, especially Laura. Voted for Jim to be mayor of San Diego. I wish more people were listening to him 40 years ago, because he understood environmental depredation and sustainable living. Sad news to hear about his leaving us.
Rest in peace, Jim. I already miss your 90’s Voltaire parties. I’m gonna miss our occasional street side alternative power debates. Matt
Our beautiful fragile planet just lost one of its most committed allies. Thank you, Jim, for your lifelong dedication to sustainable alternatives. You walked the talk, and remained true to your ideals until the end. You were a giant among men!
