The Widder Curry: ‘Here We Go Again’ With More SeaWorld Fireworks

For some unknown reason, SeaWorld has announced that they are going to resume fireworks every Saturday evening at 9:50 pm until the end of August.  They are also talking about a September 1st display.

Several years ago a petition was circulated that garnered over 11,000 signatures asking SeaWorld to stop the fireworks.  Cited was the noise pollution that was detrimental to the environment, humans, and animals.  The Humane Society talked about how many stray animals were rescued during the displays; about how many animals suffered severe angst from the noise; about how fireworks were not a necessary part of the SeaWorld Shows.  And, thankfully, SeaWorld stopped the daily shows.

And now, for some unfathomable reason, they are bringing them back. True, not on an everyday basis, but on a weekly basis.  I don’t think that makes much of a difference.  Pollution is pollution, be it on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.  The animals will suffer; the bay will become polluted again; people with PTSD with still shudder and fret and for what purpose?

I have already been told by people that they like the fireworks. They tell me they are beautiful and they love to watch them. I have already been accused that the reason that my dog freaks out so badly when he hears the repercussions of the display is because of my reaction. I have been told that I must have “taught” him to react strongly to the noises. That is a bunch of b.s. Animals ears are much more sensitive than humans. The noises hurt them. It scares them.

I can see absolutely no reason for SeaWorld to begin their firework shows again. I am ready to sign the petition – again. Let’s get on it because before we know it, they will be back to a nightly occurrence. Shame on SeaWorld.

Everyday in the summer back when I moved here was too much.

But 6 times a year? Count me as someone who thinks that enhances life here.

How does it enhance life? It pollutes the bay and subsequently the ocean; it scares the hell out of animals, both land and sea; it upsets people with PTSD, of which there are many in San Diego; it causes noise pollution. Sea World is supposed to be aiding sea animals; they are an animal husbandry organization that protects marine life. They do not need to have fireworks in their parks. It is unnecessary; a waste of money, and, in the long run, disastrous to the environment.

Might a good time to consider doing some high performance video mapping at Sea World. Could be quite a spectacle, the audio could be highly controlled throughout the park and wouldn’t impact neighbors/animals. Potentially quite an experience for park patrons.

I miss the fireworks. I wish they were every night. And every morning. Over lunch too. I wish they had more of the loud booms, especially the loud ones.

You must lead a very sad and lonely life, Joe Mama, that you have nothing better to do than post a comment like that. You should spend that idle time doing something more useful, like cleaning your toilet.

CCC has been completely negligent about the SeaWorld property for years! Yet another regulatory agency fails in protecting our environment. For a quick flashlight on CCC’s performance, go here:

My husband and I went this past Saturday and may never go to seaworld again. The flamingos at the park were stampeding they were so terrified and when the music died down you could hear their screaming. As we were exiting we then heard the sea lions barking like dogs in a kennel. It was traumatic to see how viscerally terrified these animals were. Torture!!! Fireworks are not worth the well-being of these animals. I feel like a terrible person who witnessed animal torture and know when it’s going to happen again and again. Save the flamingos!!!

My adopted shelter dog of 8 years low crawls to the bath tub and shivers every time those fireworks happen. Getting rid of the nightly display has been wonderful for us. Fireworks should be saved for special events and holidays. Saturday at SeaWorld by no stretch meets that criteria; it is essentially a nature-oriented theme park. Besides the noise pollution, what does the spent fireworks debris do for local water quality?

I went to Sea World for the first time thinking that it would be similar to an aquarium where animals are well taken care of and respected. Boy was I mistaken! I felt like I was at a horrible circus as when I walked in the park a Sesame Street dance show was happening wheeling around the park. It was literally so loud it hurt my ears. The orcas were in a space so small I felt ill watching them as were the dolphins and belugas. The belugas were beautiful but swimming in circles they were so bored! I find it appalling that Sea World does fireworks at all. They obviously are focused on one thing and that is purely entertaining the masses. The sea creatures are there for human amusement and I will never be back. Growing up going to the phenomenal Baltimore aquarium and then going to something like sea world was mind blowing.

Thank you for your comment, Carolyn. The aquarium in Monterey is like the one in Baltimore. I wish more people thought the same way that you do. It is truly a crime, because it is an amusement park at the expense of the animals – and the environment and…. There is no reason for fire works for any reason. Too bad not enough people realize that.
