Farewell to a Staple

Editordude: On Tuesday, July 9th, 2019 Judi Curry visited OB’s Village Kitchen, probably for her last time – under the current management – as it is up for lease.

By Judi Curry

Thirty-two years ago my husband Bob and my three daughters and I had our first meal at the Village Kitchen.  Lopez was the owner cook; Esther was the cashier – she later became my beautician – and Liz and Eleana were waiting tables.  It turned out that they were the children of Lopez and Esther.

We had so many delightful times there.  We had our first taste of “menudo”; our first taste of “albondigas”; some of the best Machaca we have ever had.   Bob loved their breakfasts – so much for so little money.  The recipes were extraordinary and I even asked Lopez for several of them.

The family made my family feel good.  They were always friendly; always asked about what we were doing and whether we were being successful or not.

Now, 32 years later, it is time for Lopez to take a much needed rest. Esther passed away two years ago this month.  Eleana is thinking of moving up north; Liz is holding down the fort and will remain in San Diego aiding Lopez in adjusting to retirement while she looks for other employment.

It is with sorrow that I say good bye to all of them; it is with joy that they are able to seek new adventures in their lives.  They aided in making my life a happier one; it is now time for them to take it easy, enjoy life, and know that they were a tremendous part of the community and will be missed.

I lived in OB from 1983 until 1992, every Sunday after Church in OB, my husband at the time and our friends from Church would go to Village Kitchen for brunch. Every Sunday, coffee with cream (bottomless) and good old fashioned omelettes. Like Paesano’s this was a family place. Everything I have grown love about San Diego is going away. Sad for us but I am happy for the family, enjoy retirement and much needed rest!

OB resident for 40 years.. moved to desert to retire… watch all the OB news…have decal on car and sometimes get a honk and thumbs up ?? OB rules,. ..we are a cohesive unique community. Time changes things… we were discovered, prices went SKY high, thus forcing out many. Fond Memories of Village Kitchen ( breakfast often). Pacific Shores, Nati’s, South Beach, Catalina Lounge, Sunshine company, and a few more?

I lived on OB from 1976-1998. My grandma and I would go in every Thursday morning, before school, and have breakfast. Sandy (red hair) would always be our server. I always ordered the same thing… biscuits and gravy, a side of extra crispy bacon, and a hot chocolate with whipped cream.
