OMG! A partially-submerged jet airliner has just been discovered just off the Ocean Beach Pier!
The news even made Newsweek online.
What’s going on? According to iDropNews:
Social media users on Twitter, Tik Tok, and Instagram are seemingly freaking out over what appears to be an underwater airplane near the pier in Ocean Beach, a coastal neighborhood located in San Diego County. But it’s not exactly what it appears to be.
While disturbing and shocking at first, the image of the “submerged” plane is basically a common error in satellite imagery.

- Satellite images are taken from above and stitched together to create an aerial view map.
- The satellite image from the rear of the plane shows a clear view of the Pacific Ocean, while the second photo caught the plane in flight.
- After the two images were pieced together, it appeared that half of the plane was submerged, when in reality, it was flying its expected course.
Based on its direction, the plane is clearly arriving at San Diego’s international airport, which is located just a few miles away from the supposed crash site. This adds further credibility to the satellite image error theory (not to mention there haven’t been any plane crashes reported near Ocean Beach in recent history).
A cross-check of Google Maps’ satellite images show no such plane, as most of these types errors and imperfections are edited and removed before being used.

Newsweek reached out to Snapchat for comment about why the plane was appearing on the map and if, in fact, it was the site of a crash. According to Snapchat, the plane appearing on the map isn’t an Easter egg or the site of a crash. Rather, it’s a little blip that occurred while the satellite images were taken.
Snapchat’s Snap Map is powered by satellite imagery from companies like Mapbox. If a plane was flying across the area while the satellite images were being recorded, it would appear on the map. Normally these kinds of interferences are scrubbed from the images before they are added to the map, but as the images reveal, that part of the imagery must have been overlooked.
Oh. Is that all? Well, of course, OBceans knew all of this all along.

I’ve been told by a few long-time natives that the city dumped a bunch of cars not too far away from where that plane “is” in the photo. Reason being they needed to help protect the lower sections of the pier during NW/WNW swells. Any validity to this? During big swells there does seem to be a peak out there….

However, planes only land from the west in heavy fog or other weather conditions. So not very often.
That sunken plane has been there for years. The aluminum skin holds up really well to the salt water. It’s a fun place to scuba dive, lots of fish and critters in there. Friend of mine even found some bones in there. Probably from the crew since there were no passengers on board at the time.
