June 13th Thursday 7 pm Film Night ” The Soloist” This 2009 British-American drama film is based on the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a musician who developed schizophrenia and became homeless. The screenplay by Susannah Grant is based on the book, The Soloist by Steve Lopez, a Los Angeles Times columnist who discovers Ayers and writes about him in the newspaper. Starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. People are welcome to stay afterwards and discuss our concerns about our own growing homeless population and solutions.

Carbon trading is the focus of this film. REDD, or “reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation,” is one of the most controversial issues in the climate change debate. The basic concept is simple: governments, companies or forest owners in the South should be rewarded for keeping their forests instead of cutting them down. The devil, as always, is in the details. REDD is a false solution, because it does not reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels.
Movie: The Story of a Forest (2018) 37 minutes In 2004, a group of activists in South Florida stumbled upon a plan from biotech industry giants, supported by the governor’s administration, to clear a vast swath of land in the Northeast Everglades to accommodate the Scripps Biotech Research Institute. The activists launched a 10-year campaign to stop development, during which civil disobedience arrests, lawsuits, scandal, corruption, tree sits, and blockades resulted in both victories and losses. Earlier this year, Oceana celebrated a major victory to eliminate an incredibly destructive fishing gear- drift gillnets AKA “walls of death.” Now, the Pacific Fishery Management Council is considering allowing a fishing practice to take its place that is equally destructive – Pelagic longlines. These lines hook sea birds, sea turtles, sharks, and even marine mammals. In fact, over 40 percent of what is hooked is discarded making this gear very wasteful. The Commemoration is presented by ADC San Diego, Islamic Center of San Diego, Jewish Voice for Peace-SD, KARAMA, Majdal Center, Middle Eastern Rights Assoiation, Network of Arab-American Professionals-SD and Palestinian Youth Movement-SD. Balboa Park Recital Hall. 2019 is the 71st anniversary of Al Nakba, the catastrophe of 1948 when 90% of the population of Palestine lost their homes and land. It is also the 52nd anniversary of Al Naksa, the set back, when Israel took control of the rest of historic Palestine. But Palestinian resistance has continued over all these years, from the 1968 Battle of Karameh in Jordan to the on-going Great March of Return in Gaza. This year’s commemoration begins with a buffet dinner at 5:00 pm, followed by the program at 6:00 PM.
