At 2:00 pm on Wednesday, Mad Munch Grilled Cheezer Co. at 4871-B Newport finally threw open its doors to the public – and twenty minutes later when this reporter stepped in to take some photos – the place was busy.
The long-anticipated opening now has Kate Uhle and her fiance Zach Heinz beaming.
It took them over 600-plus days to make it happen, Kate told me.
The main wall behind the front counter is filled with cardboard cut-out menu items.
On the east wall are dozens of well-known mustachioed men. (The cheese sandwich guy in their logo has a large mustache.)
There are a couple of tables inside and it’s kinda tight. But, hey, perhaps the wait is worth it. We certainly wish them the best – and I’ll have to return and try something.
Here’s the menu:

Why didn’t you try something while there, editor dude?
I was in a rush and they were busy; but definitely going back to try something.
600 plus days…and they make a cardboard menu??
That 600 days is a big g reason why locally owned establishments are going away. That’s a long time to be paying rent without any income.
Before jumping to any conclusions about the 600 days, it would be good to know what took so long. In my work, a contractor will claim “It took eight damn months to get this submittal approved.” Then, when you look into the facts, 7 of the 8 months was their own fault. I’m not saying that was the case here but something unusual happened, it would not take that long for remodeling such a small space even if the paperwork was a bitch.
And, every time I hear about how long it takes to develop something, I have to remind people that all the approvals are required because the public, at some time or another, wanted things like environmental reports, historical reviews, ADA reviews, etc. It would be best to hear this story from the owners.
You think it’s easy remodeling thrift shop stores,
Try building a to-go restaurant in San Diego,
It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll…
I walked by about 4pm on the opening day. There were people there but it wasn’t super busy.
I also saw OB Hardware had a sign “Now Open Sundays.” That’s great. All the normal staff were there too.
