Point Lomans Anne Jackson Hefti and Amy Ryan have started a campaign to get the City of San Diego to stop using herbicides and toxic chemicals at city parks, playgrounds and beaches. It’s called Campaign for a Non Toxic San Diego and they are lobbying Mayor Faulconer using an online petition and other traditional tactics.

It all started when Anne and Amy were walking their dogs at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park earlier this year. The women believe they exposed to wind-drift toxic herbicide sprayed by workers there and began doing research on Round-Up. The OB Rag picked up the story with Judi Curry writing about it. Other media have followed suit.

Anne and Amy are mobilizing their supporters to the May 22 meeting of the OB Town Council to present their concerns and seek help in the campaign. As of this writing, 300 people have signed the Petition. Go ahead and sign it.

Here’s the language of the Petition for a Non Toxic San Diego:

We are asking the City of San Diego leaders to make our health, as well as the health of our children and pets, their priority over weed control. It should be a basic human right for our children to be protected in the parks and playgrounds where they play, especially since the current exposure is happening for purely cosmetic reasons (weed control).

We are asking the City of San Diego adapt an Integrative Pest Management (IPM) similar to Irvine California’s IPM which places organic methods as a priority and discontinues the use of herbicides and toxic chemicals in our city. For information on Irvine’s IPM visit Non Toxic Neighborhoods http://www.nontoxicirvine.org

We are asking the City of San Diego to require the contractor(s) at city parks to abide by the law as provided by the federal government and not permit the public in the areas when they are being sprayed with glyphosate or any herbicide product until a Non Toxic San Diego IPM is in place.

We are asking the City of San Diego to require that contractor(s) at city parks provide an “Intent of Use” sign to be posted 3 days prior to spraying pesticides to provide the community the choice of avoiding the area, or not, until a Non Toxic San Diego IPM is in place.

Reminder: Non Toxic San Diego supporters and campaign members – Please come to this meeting to let the OBTC know how you feel about poisons being used in the community, schools and parks where our children, and pets play. Let’s ask the OBTC to support Campaign Non Toxic San Diego! Green Fields NOT Toxic Trails. Wednesday, May 22, 2019 @ 7 PM, at the Masonic Center, 1711 Sunset Cliffs Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107-3214
