There has been a change in the date for the official re-opening of the Ocean Beach Pier.
It’s been changed to 8:00 a.m., Friday, May 24, 2019. It had been set for Thursday the 23rd.
The Mayor is still coming, and he’ll give some opening remarks – natch. We’ll hoping Councilwoman Jen Campbell will speak as well. Lifeguard Chief Gartland will also be on hand. The only local community leader in the Mayor’s press release to be involved is Denny Knox, Executive Director of the OBMA. (We’re certain this is just an oversight.)
[We have also found out where Conrad Wear has been hiding out since the City Council election! He’s now the Policy and Council Affairs Coordinator for the Mayor.]

What the hell do we need the mayor for reopening the pier? It was damaged and the city had to repair it. Simple. This is not dedication of a new pier. Just unlock the gates and be done with it, why is this now a political moment, just because the city did its regular job? Ridiculous.
I don’t see the use or harm in taking a political opportunity but yes, delaying it because of the mayor’s press conference is so wrong.
The upside is the city is cleaning up every square inch of it these past few days. (Probably just a coincidence.)
I hope no one goes to this stupidity and Faulconer is left talking to himself.
I think the OBMA sponsored the 50th anniversary of the OB Pier, so maybe having Knox there makes some sense.

OB is getting no love when it comes to repairing beach access, lifeguard tower, etc.
Blame can be placed on the Mayor and his staff.
There will be press coverage (likely TV . . . the local press LOVE the pier).
Seems to me that this is an opportunity to get a little ol’ protest going to get the message out to the rest of the County without a whole lot of prep or trouble.
Suppose the police are out in force to “clean up the wall” for a day or two.
Zapf’s cameras will be overseeing the progress.
Good news! The Mexican seafood truck is back at the Sunset Cliffs/Voltaire Shell lot.
The same great seafood and reasonable prices as it was during its brief stay a couple years ago.
