We will be having our grand opening, 30th year anniversary party, spring fundraiser in May at our new location at 4862 Voltaire St. Until then someone will be there on Saturdays from noon to 6 pm if you want to stop by and check in with us. We are looking forward to getting back to serving our community as an important resource for environmental, peace and social justice information. Thanks for your support all these years.

April 5th Friday 6:30 pm Sierra Talks – Mystery Cat: Southern California’s Elusive Mountain Lion. Joyce Beers Center, 3900 Vermont St, San Diego, CA 92103, Join volunteer naturalist Don Endicott for a presentation of Southern California’s seldom seen apex predator, puma concolor cougar. Don will share the incredible attributes and signature behaviors of the big cats, show how relationships between mountain lions and people have changed over time, outline their key contributions to a healthy wilderness environment, and address the challenges and threats facing our local apex predator.
Don’s presentation features still photos, sound tracks, and video footage of seldom seen behaviors, including nursing kittens and bonus footage of two trail encounters filmed by a hiker and a bicyclist. Come hear how San Diego residents did their part in growing vegetables during the harsh years of two World Wars.
With the help of the San Diego Floral Association, urban community gardens were established in 1917. “War Gardens” (later renamed “Victory Gardens”) declined in popularity over the two decades after World War I but, with the threat of another war, their importance was revived. Lee Somerville, a landscape historian, master gardener and author of Vintage Wisconsin Gardens, (Wisconsin Historical Society Press, 2011) will bring examples of the seeds, plants and recipes of the time period. April 28th Sunday 10 am – 5 pm EarthFair 2019 “Protect our climate” Balboa Park. San Diego EarthWorks’ EarthFair 2019 will be our 30th annual celebration! Produced by 300+ volunteers, EarthFair features more than 300 exhibitors, special theme areas, a Food Pavilion, a special Kids’ Activity Area, entertainment venues, the Earth Day Parade and energy-efficient vehicles in the Cleaner Car Concourse. Each year, the EarthFair draws around 60,000 visitors. More info here.
April 28th 10 am – 6 pm Zero Wasting @ Earth Fair 2019 This will be our tenth year for the San Diego Earth Fair to set a goal to become a Zero Waste Event. We would like you to be a part of it! Recycling has been available since the beginning of Earth Day and recently collection of organic materials for composting has been added.
In the past, the organics bins were only placed in the food court area, but this year we will have the organics bins placed throughout the park. There remains some mixed material in the trash, comprised of both non-recyclable and recyclable materials, but most of this material could be recycled. Our members and volunteers have a very important responsibility. To get to zero waste we need to make sure that the attendees use the appropriate bin. Our volunteers will be the guide. We will use this opportunity to teach attendees how zero waste can eliminate the need for landfills and concepts such as “waste,” educate attendees about the need for manufacturer redesign and responsibility, greenhouse gas emission reductions by recycling, and monetary value of resource management versus landfill reliance.
We ask your assistance to make this worthy goal a reality this Earth Day. All volunteers are required to go to one of the training please select from the following dates that would best suit your schedule.
