There are no development projects on the agenda for the Ocean Beach Planning Board meeting Wednesday, May 1, but there are plenty of other issues up for the volunteer panel to review. The Board meets at 6pm sharp in the Community Room of the OB Rec Center, 4726 Santa Monica.
Lane Reductions for West Pt Loma Blvd?
The Board will wade into the increasingly sticky issue of the city’s proposed “road diet” for a section of West Point Loma Boulevard. The proposal calls for a reduction of the 4 lane boulevard to 2 lanes between Nimitz and Sports Arena Blvd and the removal of some parking along that stretch. Apparently, as per the agenda, the OB Board took a vote on the issue back in June 2018.
As we reported then:
At their monthly meeting held Wednesday, June 6 [2018], the Ocean Beach Planning Board approved in concept a protected bike path along West Point Loma Avenue, between Nimitz and Sports Arena. The protected bike path, called a “cycle track”, would allow parking, much like the bike path does along sections of Wabaska Avenue near Voltaire Street in Point Loma. …
After some discussion, the Board passed a motion recommending the city evaluate and consider making West Pt Loma Avenue have a “road diet” of 4 down to 2 lanes, without removing parking and with protected bike lanes. It passed unanimously.
Since that vote and since a similar more recent vote by the Peninsula Community Planning Board in support of the “road diet”, opposition to the reduction in lanes has surfaced. There is now an online petition against the reduction.
Overnight Parking Lot Enforcement
The Board will review the times the “no parking” ban in beach lots is enforced. Currently police are enforcing just the 2-4 am closure. The Board may consider whether to recommend the enforcement of longer closure hours.

I-8 Corridor Improvements
As per the agenda, the Board will review the non-vehicular traffic conditions at Sunset Cliffs Ave, Nimitz Blvd and the I-8 junction.
Capital Improvement Projects – will be confirmed by the Board (or not) as feedback to the city. It should be noted that in the current proposed mayor’s budget, there is nothing for either the OB Library expansion or the new OB lifeguard station.
