In Defense of ‘Meh’: Enough With this AOC Character Already!

Recently, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took an unwarranted shot at the heart and soul of American Democracy: the moderates.  As NBC news reported, AOC opined that:

“Moderate is not a stance. It’s just an attitude towards life of, like, ‘meh,’” she said, shrugging her shoulders for emphasis. “We’ve become so cynical, that we view ‘meh,’ or ‘eh’ — we view cynicism as an intellectually superior attitude, and we view ambition as youthful naivete when … the greatest things we have ever accomplished as a society have been ambitious acts of visions.

“The ‘meh’ is worshiped now. For what?” she continued to cheers.

What can one say about this impudent snark other than, how dare she?

I, for one, think this dismissal of all things moderate is a clear sign of Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s deep immaturity and lack of understanding that it is the middling not the visionary that Made America Great.  Like the other radicals-in-Democrats’-clothing who use terms like “corporate” or “neoliberal” to describe their betters, this unpleasant upstart has the eminently bad taste to judge the present by the standard of history and claim we aren’t cutting it.

And while it is certainly clear-headed and responsible to call out the left for their extreme and divisive views, chastising moderates for their cynicism is indeed youthful naivete.  What Alexandria and her social media minions fail to understand is that the moderate, like your mother, is the giver of oatmeal rather than ice cream.

The moderate disappoints you for your own good.

You may want to fight economic inequality in some “real” fashion, but you fail to recognize that challenging inequities in our capitalist system is not just in bad taste, but it is bad for fundraising. Furthermore, notions like “class solidarity” are relics of the past only to be pulled out at Labor Day breakfasts, if at all.

Taxing the rich and corporations?  You may as well hope a herd of unicorns will come to your birthday party.  And no, I don’t care what the polling on the issue says.

You think it makes sense to call for things like the Green Dream or whatever it is in the face of catastrophic climate change but you just don’t seem to understand that while we know we have to recognize that climate change exists (at least rhetorically), we simply can’t be bothered to do ANYTHING about it, no less actually try to do something big.

To be blunt, calling for “transformational” things is a little embarrassing, and we’d rather not talk about it at all, thank you.  This business about only having a decade to act has to go too, as we’d prefer to slide toward ecocide in a dignified fashion without all the fuss and bother.

Go dance in a video or something instead of talking about extinction and getting the youngsters all stirred up.

And please don’t start with your immigrants’ rights ranting about abolishing ICE and such.  While we like to talk about strong women of color, we prefer them to share our views and not scare white people who will never vote for a Democrat anyway.

Instead of this “AOC” with her callous insensitivity to acceptable political norms, give me a stolid moderate who relentlessly talks about bipartisanship in the face of creeping fascism.

As long as we crabwalk our way there, I’m good.

Give me a New Democrat who knows how to patronize the base while not disturbing our faceless masters.

Are you listening Koch brothers?

I want a stern lecture about electability, responsibility, and the assurance that I can’t ask for too much because some things will never happen—ever . . .

Compromised incrementalism that sacrifices one core principle after another is what really gets my blood pumping!

For the love of God, sell me “meh” wrapped up as hope and make sure I don’t get too demanding when it comes time for results.

All we need is not love or hope or revolution or other silly aspirational ideas.

No, all we need is “meh,” so shut up and go home with your scary socialism and scandalously unprofessional sexiness that powerfully disturbs me—buy a pantsuit for Christ’s sake!

I couldn’t agree more.
We need old white men running the show at a critical juncture of history like this. Next thing you know the radical left will be talking about healthcare, jobs, housing, and education, when everybody knows the invisible hand of the free market is all the help needed.

It’s a wonderful world we live in where racism is tolerated and encouraged when it’s directed at white males.

Imagine if Biden talked about the “black man’s culture” followed with a bunch of stereotypes, he’d be run out of town in a heartbeat.

Um, ok, I’m seriously not sure if this was tongue in cheek or not? I follow Jim Miller’s posts routinely, and like them but, tbh, these days its getting harder and harder, apparently, especially given the GOP’s consistently supremely juvenile responses, see https://kslnewsradio.com/1903166/lee-floor-speech-reaction-video/
to actually present meaningful discourse.
I guess, for me, its long overdue time to cut the antics, whatever side they are coming from. Meh hasn’t been in my vocab for awhile now. :-)

Was it tongue in cheek? The very first sentence is “This post was written for April 1st.”

Yes it was meant to be tongue in cheek, but joking aside, Alexandria is a bit Batshit.

I am a life-long Democrat and I sincerely hope the grown-ups in the party can take charge and find an electable candidate who will appeal to the great majority of American voters, especially those who felt their needs were ignored in 2016. If open borders, free everything for everyone and rampant socialism from candidates who self-identify as Socialists are planks of the Democratic Party platform in 2020 we are certainly doomed to another Trump term.

Carl, perhaps the more important question is just who are the grown-ups? Followed by the statement that a blanket paranoia of any form of socialism, and there are many, and comments such as “free everything for everyone” just isn’t the ‘maturity’ this country needs.

If you have anything substantive then say it instead of sniping fatuous comments from the sideline

I’m with you Carl, we can’t let the extreme left take over the party the same way the tea baggers hijacked the republicans. We need somone with mainstream appeal who can flip one or two red states, otherwise its 4 more years of trumpypants!

Does Bernie have the proper mainstream appeal?

In some alternate universe there is an election mechanism in place that favors moderate and centrist candidates that are better equipped to serve the varied interests of the people.

This circus act of swinging back and forth between extreme candidates does not benefit the common man.

No, he is the exact opposite of mainstream!

So Sam, what’s your idea of mainstream? Trump base? Heartland America? Clintonites? And your idea of “extreme candidates”? Of the 17 running Democratic contenders (Trump being the 18th) who is centrist/moderate/non-extreme in your view?

Sam April 3, 2019 at 8:40 pm

Biden, Klobuchar, Beto. These are the only candidates that can effectively flip 2 or more red states. Lets not forget that Trump is probably going to take Virginia this time around based on the cluster f#$% of a mess that the Democrats have made there. People in the middle of the country/heartland, whatever you want to call it, are not going to vote for a candidate that is running around and bashing every white guy over 35 while screaming from the mountaintops about the unfair state of trans migrant’s rights to free sex change operations while they are here illegally. I don’t mean to be crude, but that is the reality of what they see and hear.

The democrats need to think strategically, otherwise we’re going to be in exactly the same boat that we were in in 2016, winning the popular vote while losing the electoral college, yet again.

We keep forgetting- all of the hypothetical polls before the 2016 election had Bernie beating Trump by good margins. It is the Independents that decide Presidential elections and all Trump has right now is his base and you cannot win that way. The 2020 Presidential Election is for The Democrats to lose.
