We are almost ready to reopen at our new location at 4862 Voltaire Street, which is right across the street from our old location. We are working on setting up our library this Saturday, March 2nd at 1:00 pm if anyone would like to help. We will post our opening date sometime this month on our website: oceanbeachgreencenter.org. March 8th Friday 6:30 pm Sierra Club film Night. “The Garden” 8304 Clairemont Mesa Blvd #101, San Diego, CA 92111.
This film tells the story of a huge community garden in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods, South Central Los Angeles. Created as a form of healing after the L.A. riots of 1992 by mostly immigrant farmers from Latin America, this urban farm was destroyed, and the land sold to a wealthy developer by the L.A. City Council in a closed-door session. The farmers organized and fought back, to no avail. The Garden raises challenging questions for Americans about liberty, equality, and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable among us.

Please join us for this very informative talk by entomologist Dr. Michael Wall from the San Diego Natural History Museum. One study has estimated that the annual value of ecological services provided by insects in the United States to be at least $57 billion. That puts insects at about #54 on the Fortune 500, just above Disney, which generates around $55 billion annually on a global basis. This microscopic workforce is essential to healthy ecosystems, yet our understanding of climate change impact on insects is in its infancy. Dr. Michael Wall is Curator of Entomology at the San Diego Natural History Museum. He also currently serves as Vice President of Science and Conservation. Dr. Wall is passionate about collections-based research and regional exploration. His talk will cover some of the Museum’s regional climate change research and then delve into current research finding from around the globe regarding climate change and insects.
