Airbnb vans invade San Diego streets
By Mike Madriaga / San Diego Reader
On the Airbnb app/website, Craig is referred to as a “Superhost” for his $70 per night unit that can sit five visitors.
Craig accommodates his guests in his green 1998 Ford E350 van; he’s based out of Clairemont. “[It’s] great for camping and the back seat folds down into a bed for two,” he states on his ad. …
Last week, an Ocean Beach resident posted a collage of photos on Facebook titled: “VanBnb coming to a curb near you ….” One of the photos was of a black van that was available for $28 a night.

Just what home owners in the beach community need, people renting vans to sleep overnight on residential streets. My spouse and I had no idea twenty years ago when we purchased our home it was going to be located in a public campground.
And the bathroom facilities were where?…
Mary, if history is a guide, then unfortunately the bathroom facilities end up right outside the vehicle door at the curb. Ask folks that live along Froude, Guizot, Santa Barbara, Venice, etc.
Or literally any street in OB….. Just as bad in the War Zone
Why oh why is the city letting this happen?
ah, San Diego, the sell out town, the drunk navy guys running their mega trucks off the bridge to crash and kill into the market below in Barrio Logan, (that guy is probably back on ship…why does the military have its own courts?) the cannabis heads and beach drunks stumbling, vomiting and dying from head injuries (the most common form of death in Pacific Beach) from falling from a drunken fight, hit by a drunk in a car, bike, scooter or just falling down themselves… how many handicapped drunks do I know who ruined their legs/knees/ ankles, etc… hitting the seawall on bike drunk? more than two handfuls, that I know of personally… how many times have I been run into on bike by a drunk bicyclist? many times.. and we keep encouraging them… maybe the city should pass a new law obliging everyone in the beach areas to wear a helmet when outside… so horrible to witness the waste of life and limb… because of drugs and alcohol… what a shining example for the world.
You’re not that bright are you? Anthony Sepolio (the drunk Navy driver) was convicted of vehicular manslaughter. Sentencing is April 2. No not he is NOT back on his ship. If you didn’t know this, you are the only person in SD that doesn’t. Why does the military have it’s own courts? Is that a serious question? Regardless, he was tired in civil court since this was an off base off duty incident. Didn’t know that? If so holy s**t. As to all the other problems you ranted about, those have been going on a very long time and they are not unique to SD in the slightest.
I had some people sleeping in there van in front of my home a week ago. It’s truly glorious that we’re now reaping what’s been sowed for so many years with the permissive attitude toward vagrancy at the beach. It’s probably only a matter of time before a homeowner confronts someone camping in front of their home and the situation will escalate with an unfortunate ending.
Will be interesting.
It isn’t permissive attitudes, the ACLU and homeless advocates recently won in court against San Diego’s sleeping in vehicle law, which now can’t be enforced.
That’s certainly not in dispute. The fact that OB has given refuge to vagrants, often of choice, now makes it a lush paradise for those who want to camp out in front of our homes for three nights before switching to the other side of the street. The law was overturned in court with that permissive attitude already in place.
It’s a combination of both.
Micporte says it well. San Diego is a sell out city. The people who live here and, pay the taxes need to elect public officials who represent our interests and hold them accountable.
Maybe I can Airbnb a cardboard box.
