The OB Planning Board meets this Wednesday, February 6 – and on deck for their review are two projects, an alcohol license and transit parking issues.
The monthly board meeting will be at the OB Rec Center, 4726 Santa Monica Avenue, and begins at 6pm.
5026 Saratoga
A 3-story residence is planned for 5026 Saratoga. On December 19, the Project Review Committee punted the project to the full board. Here’s our report from 12/20/18:
A Coastal Development Permit (CDP) for the construction of a garage addition, and the construction of a 2-story residence above the garage for 913 square feet, with an existing detached residence on the site was approved by the review sub-committee and punted to the full board by a vote of 6 to 0. The owner admitted he plans to move into the larger and new residence and continue renting out the front unit as a short-term vacation rental.
The front building was built in 1938-39 and will not be touched by the new construction, if approved.
5018 Narragansett
Also on the agenda is an application for a process 3 CDP for the demolition and remodel of 2 single-story units and the addition of a second story on each unit. This project was also punted to the full board by the initial review committee on Dec. 19th. Here’s our report:
The sub-committee also voted 6 to 0 to send the project at 5018 Narragansett to the full board. It’s an application for the demolition and remodel of 2 single-story units and the construction of a second story addition on each unit. There are plans for roof decks and 4 parking spaces in a 2-car garage and tandem spaces.
A number of neighbors to the project attended the meeting and voiced some concerns; there’s not enough space in the alley for the trash cans to the property with the new design, there’s already parking problems in the alley; if the new structure is 2 stories (it is) it will be extremely close to the 2-story, 10-unit apartment building next door; in general, the project is “pushing the envelope for the size of the property.”
Alcohol License for Dirty Birds
The board will also review the alcohol license from Dirty Birds, moving into the new OB Plaza. The board was contacted by Vice in regards to the proliferation of of alcohol licenses in census tract 75.02.

A chain sports bar? No thank you. There are too many places serving alcohol already in the area. Those prices are really high too, $7.95+tax for 5 little buffalo wings?
A beer/wine license for a restaurant would be one thing, but this is a bar with liquor that only serves chicken wings and tater tots.
ZZ, I think we’re on the same side of the page again :-). Um, how about a tea room? A Patisserie? Something for the locals instead of the tourists? How about a book shop? An art supply store? A Tai Chi studio? A family medical center? A gardening center? A spice shop? Puhleease, can we think outside the alcohol box for once??? What were the stats last year- 300% over the alcohol license demographic?! Come on, OBPB, get your mettle out!!
A book store did recently open on Voltaire. It’s small but we need to show our support. Unfortunately it’s next to a bar so it quickly loses its charm after about 3pm.

Where? Newport would be a better spot than Voltaire. (Hungary Lu’s Italian deli and Chris’s liquor and deli will be hard competition).
No worries. It’s not the type of place for us anyway.
It seems like this is an unintended consequence of Air BnB… most Obeaceans would disapprove of the majority of the restaurants and stores going in, while others are not making enough $$$ to pay the outrageous rents and leaving town.
