in Ocean Beach

The week isn’t even over and there’s been two stabbings reported in Ocean Beach so far.

The most recent one was last night about 10 minutes past midnight outside Winstons. And the first one was Monday night on Newport Avenue near Bacon. Both appeared to be instances where someone tried to intervene in an argument or altercation.

Last night a 21-year-old man walked out of Winstons on Bacon when he saw a friend of his in some kind of altercation with another guy. He tried to break it up when he was stabbed in his right arm by the guy his friend was fighting. That man ran off, while the victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.

The guy with the knife – now the suspect – was described as a white male in his 20s, with tattoos on his right arm. At the time, he was reportedly wearing jeans and no shirt. Fox5

Back last Monday, January 14, a man was having an argument with his girlfriend just before 7pm on the 4900 block of Newport when he was stabbed by another guy who had tried to intervene.

Reportedly (everyone involved have not been publicly identified) the couple were arguing when a man in his 30’s or 40’s jumped in and slapped the guy arguing. The guy slapped then punched the intruder and knocked him to the ground. Now, there’s been no allegations in any of the news reports that the argument between the couple was violent.

So, the guy knocked down, gets up and runs away. But he comes back with a knife and as he runs by the victim, stabs him in the back and just keeps going on Newport. (One news report stated the suspect ran north on Newport, but of course, one can’t run north on Newport. )

Police were summoned – and as far as we know – are still searching for the assailant. The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a wound that was not believed to be life-threatening.

What the actual F***? When is this area going to be policed properly? I say you have to indict the whole area and either plant a patrol car down there 24/7 or at the very least set up surveillance to ID these a-holes when they do inevitably commit a crime. While we’re at it, perhaps all of the bike racks and “bus” railings should be taken out down there too. I’ve never seen a single bike locked up, just homeless peoples pit bulls! Time to clean up this part of town!

Sam, how could any kind of policing have prevented either of these incidents? I’m curious.

Lorie Zapf’s surveillance cameras will help police, no doubt.
“… If you come to Ocean Beach and commit a crime…, you will be on camera, and you will get caught.”
Time to view the footage, eh?

Got a subdued chuckle Vern. None of the major crimes that have occurred in OB over the last couple of years have been “solved” because of Lorie’s cameras. The cameras point toward the beach and ocean. As we predicted back when, the cameras will just push the violence east into the streets.

Which is why there should be cameras on every street corner recording in all directions 24/7. This seems to work pretty well in London, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work here.

Update from KGTV: An East County man is recovering after he was stabbed outside an Ocean Beach bar for trying to break up a fight. Kaya Hall says he was stabbed just after midnight on Jan. 17, in an alley outside Winston’s Beach Club. Hall says he just finished playing there.

“I was going to my car, and I saw a friend of mine in a fight with someone else,” he said. “I went over there and like two people jumped on him, and it was like “oh no” gotta get this guy off. A fifth guy came up and stabbed me. I thought I just got punched. I looked down, and I was gushing blood.” Whoever stabbed him got away.

Hall says there were tendon and nerve damage to his arm and he had to undergo surgery. It’s going to take about six months for his arm to heal properly. Hall plays guitar in two bands and bartends. He can’t do either of those things with his hand in a cast. He says he can still do vocals for his bands, and mix music. Police are investigating the case. Any witnesses or people with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department.” https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/man-stabbed-for-trying-to-break-up-fight
