Newly-installed San Diego Councilwoman Jen Campbell is calling on residents of District 2 to consider applying for vacancies on the City’s various boards and commissions. District 2 includes Ocean Beach, Point Loma and the Midway District, among other communities.
The City of San Diego currently has nearly 50 boards and commissions that focus on a diverse set of issues.
In a press statement, Campbell stated:
“With vacancies on our many boards and commissions, I’m asking the residents of District 2 to consider applying. If you’re passionate about an issue or an expert in your field, please take a look at our open board and commission seats to see if there’s a fit.
It’s a wonderful way to do your civic duty while making our city even better.”
For those interested in applying, Cambell’s office urges them to see the complete list of boards and commissions to determine the right one to apply to. From there, they should see the list of unscheduled and upcoming vacancies. If any resident finds a board or commission they’d like to apply to, they are asked to send their resume and cover letter to Monica Eslamian at eeslamian@sandiego.gov.

Some of these look very interesting but there is one drawback, the mayor makes all of the appointments. I don’t know how much influence Campbell can have in getting people on these boards.
Geoff. I think the process is supposed to start with the council person for your district making a recommendation to the mayors office.
I however did it a little backward. I contacted Joel Day, Director of Boards and Commissions, he sent me an app to fill out. I gathered everything I needed: resume, 3 letters of recommendation and a filled out app, and sent it to him. Then Joel sent my info to the Mayors office. I got a call from the mayors office soon after. Although I think the standard way is council person then mayors office.
I also just handed my packet to Seamus Kennedy when he visited the OBPB this week.
There was discussion about why the Mayor has not been appointing people but I’m not going to go into that here. I’m just really hoping to get appointed to one of the commissions that I feel I’m most qualified.
