Audubon to share three final wetland maps, analysis, and public access designs  – public is welcome

Tonight, Thursday, Dec. 6, San Diego Audubon will be presenting the highly anticipated final conceptual plans for ReWild Mission Bay – a project of San Diego Audubon and its partners to enhance and restore wetlands in the North East corner of Mission Bay.

The three plans, developed based on direct input from hundreds of community members, include expanded public access and habitat restoration options, as well as cost estimates and sea level rise modeling. This is the first public meeting in over a year and represents the culmination of 4.5 years of outreach and development.

These plans, and the analysis that went into them (including hydrology, cost estimates, and sea level rise modeling) are being used by the City of San Diego to inform its De Anza Revitalization Plan. San Diego Audubon hopes the City will expand its focus on enhancing natural habitat in the area to balance the oversaturation of commerce and recreation throughout Mission Bay Park, and to ensure the resiliency of the area to climate change.

Background:

Mission Bay’s wetlands supply habitat for hundreds of local wildlife species, protect San Diego from climate change impacts such as flooding, and improves water quality. Over the course of four public workshops, hundreds of San Diegans have strongly advocated for more habitat in Mission Bay to protect wildlife and our communities. The City of San Diego is currently planning how to restore and revitalize this area and these results directly inform their ongoing efforts.

San Diego Audubon’s ReWild Mission Bay project has project funders: CA State Coastal Conservancy and US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Thursday, December 6, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
On site interviews available starting at 2:30 pm
Presentations to take place at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

DEAR CITY,
I hereby input that our uniqueness in San Diego, California is not because of TargetStores but because of our habitat which is needed DESPERATELY TO SAVE, PROTECT AND INCREASE OUR BIRDS, ESTUARIES AND ALL THE NATURAL BEAUTY AND ANIMAL SPECIES WHICH WE HAVE LET DEVELOPERS INVADE. OF ALL CITIES WHICH SHOULD BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF THESE REWILD WETLAND PROJECTS BECAUSE OF OUR CLIMATE AND THE MIGRATORY PATTERNS OF SO MANY ANIMALS.
