The Ocean Beach Town Council met on Wednesday, October 24th in front of a fairly sparse crowd of community members. The OBTC will “go dark” during the next two months and will resume meeting the fourth Wednesday of every month in January, 2019.
The following are announcements of OB events or updates by local groups:
The Ocean Beach Woman’s Club is holding their 6th Annual Fundraiser; ‘Obecian Luau‘ on November 3rd, 6pm-10pm. Proceeds will benefit fourteen different local organizations. You can learn more by visiting here.
The Ocean Beach Community Development Corporation has revised their proposed plan for a children’s play area and adult fitness hub at Ruth Varney Held Park (aka Saratoga Park). Byron Wear, who is volunteering to help with fund raising, provided a brief overview of the revised project.
The proposed design is a scaled down version of the previous project and would be more affordable. Ten percent of the area would be dedicated to a children’s play area and the rest would be open park space. To ensure ADA Compliance the play area is located next to the parking lot for easy access for all visitors to the park. Shade trees will be planted next to the lot to provide ample shade to the playground. It is projected the plan would be fully implemented in three years with the first year being dedicated to fund raising.
The Ocean Beach Library has a full schedule of upcoming community events. On Saturday, October 27th at 2:00pm there will be an interesting “Nature Talk” focusing on “Variations of Earth’s Magnetic Fields”.

Friends of the Ocean Beach Library have rescheduled their Book/DVD/CD Sale for Saturday, November 10th, 9:30-12:30. There will be lots of gift books, children’s books and vintage treasures for the holidays. Hopefully this event won’t be rained out again. Friends of the Library encourages all to attend the Barnes and Noble Book Fairs on Saturday, November 24th, 10am-8pm. A portion of all sales go to the OB Library.
The Ocean Beach Green Center is having a Fall Celebration and Fundraiser on Saturday, November 10th, 2pm-7pm at 4843 Voltaire Street. There will be groovy live music, awesome refreshments, exciting raffle prizes and more. All are invited to join the Green Center in honoring co-founder, Colleen Dietzel on her upcoming retirement and as they envision supporting the mission of the OB Green Center for years to come.
Conrad Wear, standing, gives update from Zapf office.
Conrad Wear, Community Representative for City Councilmember, Lorie Zapf, shared that she was the lone no vote to repeal the Short Term Vacation Rentals (STVR) proposition. He anticipates new language for a proposal might come out of Barbara Bry’s office as early as January. Their office is pleased with the new polystyrene (Styrofoam) ban and straws by request only measure recently passed by the City Council. Conrad also reported on the Mayor’s proposed ordinance to regulate electric scooters. We may see this moving forward in January. Lastly, Conrad shared that Zaph’s office had awarded a $5,000.00 grant to the OBTC to help fund the Holiday Parade.
Chevelle Tate, Community Representative for Senator Toni Atkins reported the legislature reconvenes in December. She extended an invitation to attend the next Holiday Open House scheduled for December 12th. Dreams for Change has been selected as the charity to benefit from this event. More details will be shared in weeks to come.
Restaurant Walk – The OBTC announced that over fifty businesses have signed up for the 39th Annual Restaurant Walk scheduled for November 13th, 5p-9p. Proceeds benefit the OB Food and Toy Drive and can be purchased online or at the OB MainStreet Association, Bancroft Pet Supplies, Sunshine Company Saloon, and Lucy’s Tavern.
The League of Women Voters presented an informative overview on different measures and proposals that will be on the November ballot.
The 2019 OBTC Board of Directors election is approaching and Letters of Intent must be submitted to info@obtowncouncil.org by Monday January 21st. This year, 8 seats are up for election. ”
