It took Eater San Diego to break the big news: Pop Pie from University Heights is moving into the former Nati’s in Ocean Beach.
It reports Pop Pie co-founder Steven Torres has confirmed – after months of denials – they’re moving into the space at Bacon and Niagara that previously was the home of one of OB’s original eateries.
Construction of the new Pop Pie could be over by the end of this year or early 2019. They’ll have space for a 130 patrons. They report:
Construction may be completed by late 2018 or early 2019 on the 3,600-square-foot restaurant that will include a wrap-around patio and seating for 130 guests. One section will feature a counter stocked with its signature sweet and savory pies and a coffee bar; customers strolling by will also be able to order both coffee and ice cream from a walk-up window. Another section will house a horseshoe-shaped cocktail bar.
Eater also adds the following – and if you read it closely, it gives clues to another mystery – what’s to become of Nati’s parking lot:
The much larger footprint will allow Pop Pie co-founder and executive chef Gan Suebsarakham to explore more of his culinary skill set. Suebsarakham says that his all-day cafe menu will include British-inspired small plates, brunch dishes, biscuits, and other baked goods. So you’re mind is already made up that you won’t like it? Even if you have chance to see it before it goes up in OB? Wow. Talk about small minded. Plus it’s primary a restaurant that has a bar (beer only). Plus food is excellent but guess you won’t go because it’s not Nati’s.

SO excited to finally have some GREAT food in this spot, nostalgic memories notwithstanding (I was never a fan of Natis). I’ve been a big fan of Pop Pie since opening and made friends with owners Steve and Gus. You couldn’t ask for two nicer guys who will make a great addition to our community. Food is off the charts delicious!

I hope their food is out of this world because so far it’s not too exciting.

I think it’s fantastic that a small local company is willing to put their investment necks on the line and are investing in our community. Their arrival should be celebrated and embraced instead of bagging on their decor. I look forward to trying their food.
IMO, decor is a main attraction. Just like a house. If you don’t like or attracted to what is looks like then you don’t rent it or buy it.
I do think this decor will appeal to the youth but I wonder if youth are into eating pot pies unless maybe there is pot inside?

I’m sure many locals will, just like the do at the other location if which I’ve seen very few tourist go in.
Looks just like the inside of the new Ketch restaurant where the Red Sails was. My kids said it was hipster, which was why I didn’t get it. No character at all.
My memories of Nati’s are of “orange”. Not Trump orange, but of the ghastly gobs of shredded orange cheese. Could never get past that.
Shredded cheese and shredded lettuce… eh, oh well.
How will OB support another restaurant? with the additions in the Dirty Birds Development – OB is tapped out especially for the winter – its a ghost town.

You guys are acting like Chili’s is going in there. And really, some of you are complaining that it seems to be geared towards a younger crowd? Maybe you’d be happy if a Country Kitchen with senior discounts was going in there.
Chris . . . chill out. There will always be resistance to change. The pies and the open atmosphere their wrap-around patio close to the foot of the Pier? I think it’s a genius match.
Time will tell the tale, as it does with all new eateries; this is a second location of a VERY successful formula, however, so a lot of the mistakes have already been made and corrected.
So . . . Chris and Peter prognosticate that the Pop Pie shop will be a success. Let’s revisit a couple of months after they open.
I think most of us still see “condos” on that parking lot. How long is the Pop Pie lease? It would be interesting what it says. Maybe they will get an option on the ground-floor commercial. All within shouting distance of OBMA.
