On Sunday, October 21, residents, families and visitors of Ocean Beach will cruise the village’s streets without cars at CiclOBias.
For one day only, the San Diego Bike Coalition is bringing its open streets celebration to OB, allowing community members to explore the neighborhood by bike, foot, scooter, skateboard – anything outside of a car. It’s hoped even locals will get to rediscover Village of Ocean Beach.
And now, CiclOBias is needing volunteers to help out during the event. They need volunteers to:
- help work the table with the bike coalition,
- watch for traffic,
- guide participants on the route —
- even ride!
Here are some details:
In Ocean Beach – Voltaire St, Bacon St, Santa Monica Ave, Newport Ave
Shift Times:
- 9am – 11am
- 11am – 1pm
- 1pm – 3pm

lame…OB doesnt need this – one of the most walkable and bike friendly neighborhoods – in the country!!

You must be new to San Diego. This event has been going on for several years now. Every year it’s in a different neighborhood. This year OB (get it? CiclOBias). Whether or not OB “needs” it is irrelevant. People enjoy this and that’s what matters.
Way to think you are the smartest guy in the room (get it? OB! – dood come on with that pretentiousness) …and every year it is an unnecessary waste for something no one wants…every day in OB is filled with bikes, walking, etc, etc. most walkable neighborhood in the country. We did not need this, it looks like it went off under the radar because again no one wants it.
CicloSDias has been around since 2012. Marginal success and attendance in OB in 2018.
Why the put-down of the bay area? I have a lot of friends who used to live in OB and who now live in the bay area. If the idea is a good one, who cares where it came from? I seem to recall the bay area was the birth place of the 60s student movement AND the original site of the hippie culture.
Not to mention that the Bay Area, especially San Francisco, has much better public transit than San Diego, world-class cultural venues (art museums, etc.), innumerable independent bookstores, unbelievable shopping and one-of-a-kind stores, and an incredibly diverse, free-thinking, and colorful citizenry. The big downers are the high cost of living and the staggering numbers of homeless people (severely mentally ill, heroin addicts, thieves, drug dealers, and more) who are out of control and literally destroying the city. The weather isn’t that great, either!
OB isn’t bike friendly at all! I fear for my life every time I have to get from my house to the bike paths to the north.
Narrow streets, no bike lanes, poor visibility around all the camper vans, locals running stop signs, tourists stopping at imaginary ones… That is if your bike hasn’t been stolen already.
They have had a bunch in SD over the years, I believe the 1st one was when Filner was mayor. There has been one in PB since then. Maybe I’m missing something, but there doesn’t seem to be anything more low tech and less bay area than riding a bike, but gotta be nice to complain

Do we really need an event to get out to the “village” and use a bike? No! because we live in coastal san diego – bikes, scooters, walking, boardwalks, trails…its all unnecessary because it is already in our OB DNA.
OB definitely DOES NOT need this in the least. With renters paying such a high premium. Where do you expect a few thousand displaced people to park? People are going to be pissed. (SD Native)
Perhaps the same place they park during the street fair, or 4th of july weekend, or any other time lots of public parking is removed at the same time tourists come in…
OMG OMG five hours midday with no driving on three whole streets! Won’t someone please think of the cars! The poor cars! And all the “displaced people,” it will be a humanitarian disaster!
The true progressive stance: ban scooters and bike shares, mandatory low density single family homes, mandatory 2-parking spaces per bedroom in new construction, free parking from Sea to Shining Sea!
All for something that is not needed or wanted…OB is pedestrian, bike, scooter, and skate friendly 24/7…we do not need an event that closes streets (around peoples houses – you know some of us actually live in OB and have jobs, families, obligations, etc.) to show us how to have a “car-free/care-free time”…if anything they should take notes on how OB operates on a daily basis – we set the example!!
These events all began in bay area and now they trying to bring that down here…nope no thanks!

Wow, some of the responses to this are amazing. I seem to recall the idea being presented at an OB Town Council meeting not too long ago and NO ONE was opposed. (Maybe OBKid and OBDave never go to town council meetings – try it sometime.)
I biked when they did this is South / North Park a few years ago and it was quite a pleasant experience.
So yeah no cars for a handful of hours. C’mon, get a grip!

Your points are valid, and OB IS largely populated by folks who walk, pedal, skateboard and get around on non-auto devices. But on this (and other topics) you might try being a bit less narrow :). Your comments are usually, shall we say, tart, which is ok, but they often miss the larger points. Just b/c OB already “does it” is a good reason for the community to set the example. Endorse the good stuff, support the efforts of others who do likewise.
For example, lots of folks already pick up beach trash, so should OB not bother to endorse and sponsor the efforts of organizations dedicated to cleaning up the environment?
Another example: Critical Mass- a last Friday of the month cycling event that used to kick off at Balboa Park. Many cities had this event, perhaps they still do, and the en masse cyclists stopping traffic in downtown SD always sent a message. It was awesome and I rode in several! For some, maybe the message was “Get out of the car and on a bike”, for others maybe it was safety-oriented, “Notice cyclists, they have the road too”, regardless (and fwiw I think that event actually started in the Bay Area) there was a positive message to be seen and heard.
So, yeah, honey works better than vinegar, and one of the REALLY cool things about OB are the values and standards it endorses. So limited parking for a day, good PSA, and probably a good time for many, just isn’t worth working up a lather because you are “already there, done that” Just sayin’ :-)
Sheesh, all these negative people. I think this will be great, another fun time with all the OBecians, music, food, laughter, bike riding, doesn’t get any better than that! Some people just complaint about everything. I’m excited and I know thousands of others will be too. All you complainers can just go visit East county that day, lol.

At 6 am this morning, the cars of hard working locals were towed. Every parking space on voltaire from sunset to bacon. Every parking space on bacon from voltaire to newport. Every parking space on newport from sunset to bacon. INSANE.
My heart goes out to every bar tender and waitress who does not work in ob but lives in OB that came home at 4 am this morning. My best friend is one of them. I texted her in a panic when I realized what was going on.
I offered to move her car to dog beach at 530am if she was forced to park in any of these spots. The fight against is right. The fight to defend it is extremely irrational. Ob Kid for Mayor. There are so many heads in the wrong place. Its scary. I mob fearlessly and graciously on all corners of this town. Sk8 bike and foot. No need to be scared.
I heard the business owners on voltaire freaking out this morning. I heard a rumor that their will be no music. What in the hell happened? it is irrelevent that this has happened in other parts of this city. It should not happen here. Steam has risen from my head. Like the dogbeach beer fest that never happened. Thank god it didnt. it sucked when real estate took the apartments. but this just blows my mind
