September 21st Friday 7:00 p.m. In honor of International Peace Day the Peace Resource Center and Ocean Beach Green Center are proud to present an introduction to the film series of “Women, War & Peace”. This 2011 KPBS series challenges the conventional wisdom that war and peace is men’s domain. With depth and complexity, the series spotlights the stories of women in conflict zones from Bosnia to Afghanistan and Colombia to Liberia, placing women at the center of an urgent dialog about conflict and security, and re-framing our understanding of modern warfare. We will be showing “PRAY THE DEVIL BACK TO HELL” which tells the powerful and uplifting story of the brave and visionary Liberian women who demanded peace for Liberia, a nation torn to shreds by a decades old civil war. September 10th Monday 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Interfaith Worker Justice of San Diego County presents the short documentary “Lana Gets Her Talk”, Friendship Hall University Christian Church DoC 3900 Cleveland St San Diego 92103.Through the film, Lana, an artist and First Nation woman, tells her story of healing from the family trauma incurred through Indian Residential Schools in Canada, which were run by faith communities of particular Christian denominations. The United States has a similar history and more urgently, could be looking at a near future in which people of faith are called to respond to families being separated and children torn from their families and culture. Don’t overlook this: Protest at Famosa Property on Sept 29
Peninsulans opposed to San Diego Housing Commission’s plan to turn a five-acre lot at Famosa and Nimitz boulevards into affordable housing are holding a community protest and a petition-signature collection drive Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the lot site. There will be refreshments, guest speakers, media and entertainment. Residents can pull up to a “drive-by lane” and sign the petition without leaving their vehicles. Owned by the SDHC, the open-space site, once a makeshift bicycle track, is proposed to be developed into a 78-unit affordable housing project. In the preliminary phase, tests are ongoing to ensure the site’s viability for development.
