These tech whores roll into town, and it belongs to them. Renting scooters, every inch of public land is their marketplace, put them anywhere what do they care, laissez-faire.
This carnival ride for young males serves them at our expense. They ride on sidewalks, they go the opposite direction on the roadway, and leave their liter all over town.
I would guess that 80% of the riders are under 30 males. I was thinking that as time goes on more females might ride, then during observation it appears that the guys ride too fast and the gals won’t put up with that for long.
Watching numerous YouTubes on the issue the main description from the guys is it is FUN.
Fun at who’s expense, most women and guys over 35 are not inclined to risk life and limb.

I agree they’re getting a bit out of hand but it’s not young males. I’ve seen plenty of young and old women AND young and old men. So have you do don’t generalize.

No, you tell them. It doesn’t take much to get some people all pissy, and others to become violent. While you’re at it, remind them that there is a helmet law too.
Incorrect. The law just changed
Now the helmet law only applies to riders under 18. But still, SECTION 1. Section 21235 of the Vehicle Code is amended to read:
21235. The operator of a motorized scooter shall not do any of the following:… (g) Operate a motorized scooter upon a sidewalk, except as may be necessary to enter or leave adjacent property.
Seems like a common sense approach to me. Now they just need to enforce this and a majority of the complaints would go away save a few regarding placement of the parked scooters.
I talked to two officers walking a beat in front of the seawall a couple of weeks ago and I asked what’s the deal with this problem. They answered very politely and honestly that, yes it’s illegal, but honestly, not a priority. In fact when he did write one up ($200 fine), he was chastised by his CO for not giving priority to other, more important incidents.
I’m hearing of incidents where riders are ramming into people on the sidewalks causing injury. Only a matter of time…….

Here we go again. This is an enforcement issue not unlike STVR lack of enforcement of zoning regulations. The city can have all the rules and regulations on the books but they are uesless without enforcement. Instead, residents are expected to tell scooter riders they are not allowed to ride on the sidewalk? Seriously?
Lori Zapf commented that the scooter rental companies create jobs. That’s great, how about creating even more jobs by hiring people to patrol the beach boardwalks and sunset cliffs and issue citations to enforce the rules that regulate operation and retrieval of these scooters?
Well, i had the hilarious pleasure of some drunken idiot run his rented scooter right smack into a green dumpster about 3 weeks ago, so hard in fact it sent his stupid and drunk butt straight to the Hospital. I was riding my bike(with helmet, and I’m 57 yrs old) when it went down. At first I was stunned, then I cound’t stop laughing. But, seriously, I too am fed up with dodging these damn scooters, even on my bicycle. I have yelled at them and been cursed at/out and told to mind my own business. It’s high time to send these stupid things away, until there are strongly enforced rules. We San Diegan are not going to pick up the tab for the greed of a few of these rich guys who infested our streets. If they want these on the streets, NOT sidewalks, make them all liable for the damage and injuries for the results. This should send these rich, so-called investors packing…
Disable them without damaging them, in effect, clip their wings. That may send a message to Bird.
PSA: Bikes must stop at stop signs and red lights!
This is right up there with all rental bikes left all over and people riding on the sidewalk. Last time is was down town it with my family i was so worried about us being hit by a scooter or a bike as i walked it took away all the enjoyment of being with the family there and trying to have a peaceful enjoyable walk.
It’s illegal to ride anything on the sidewalk. That includes skateboards.
