Accused Homeless Serial Killer to Have Mental Competency Trial
Jon David Guerrero, 41, accused of killing or wounding a dozen homeless people around San Diego in 2016- including a homeless man in Ocean Beach – will have a mental competency trial to determine legally if he is sufficiently competent to face criminal charges. The competency trial date was set for Nov. 13. He’s been at Patton State Hospital where he remains. Guerrero was arrested on July 15, 2016, after what appeared to be a serial killer spry against sleeping homeless men. He is suspected of killing Shawn Mitchell Longley, 41, who was sleeping at Robb Field, with a railroad spike. Doctors at the state psychiatric hospital in San Bernardino found in April that Guerrero was competent to assist in his own defense and understand proceedings against him. “Secret Spot” the Pirate-Themed OB Escape Room Is Reviewed
Secret Spot, a brand new pirate-themed escape room in San Diego is under review here: When you compare escape rooms in San Diego to places like Los Angeles, there’s not a lot down there to choose from. But that doesn’t mean escape rooms are not popping up in the city. One place I wouldn’t think I would find an escape room in San Diego is Ocean Beach. Next to downtown, Ocean Beach is one of the busiest places you’ll find in San Diego, and hidden amongst the restaurants and bars that line Newport Avenue is a new escape room called Secret Spot.
Secret Spot is a very new room, and when I say new, I mean new. At the time of our game, the room had been open for almost a month. It’s not common for us to play rooms that are fairly new, but when you love escape rooms as much as we do, you don’t let that stop you. Secret Spot is the brainchild of an enthusiast who was building these rooms for other places. But when it dawned on him to build one for himself, he went full speed ahead to create a pirate-themed escape room, which was very fitting since the secret spot is located just minutes from the Pacific Ocean. Homeless Heroes Help Track $600 Stolen Bike
A grateful Ocean Beach woman has her mountain bike back and she’s thanking several homeless “heroes.” Galina Semenova discovered her $600 bike gone from the second-floor balcony of her apartment on Del Monte Avenue Thursday morning. “Shock, frustration. Just started crying. Then I was angry,” said Semenova. On Friday, she and her boyfriend weren’t far away — near the Ocean Beach Pier — when she saw her bike with a group of four young homeless guys. By the time she tracked down a phone to call police, they were gone. Semenova posted details on Facebook and got a response from Grace Helms, who has lived in an RV for the past 11 years. 10News

Point Loma High Replaces Wells as Coach
Point Loma High School has named Jeff Solis to replace former major league star David Wells as coach. Wells was head coach of the Pointers for the last four years. Solis, who played at Northern Colorado, has been part of the Point Loma program for the last decade as a freshman and JV coach. His JV team was 23-4 last season.
OB Brewery Brings Home a Gold – Kilowatt Is Also a Winner
Ocean Beach Brewery captured a gold medal recently at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver with B.Right On Pale Ale (gold medal), an American-style pale ale. “It’s the first beer I’d ever brewed at OB Brewery,” brewmaster John Millea said. “It’s a pale ale that I’m pretty proud of and we were lucky enough to score the gold medal. I was pretty stoked.” It was one of the most-entered categories in the competition with 170 entrants. What makes the win more impressive is that the brewery was only opened in July 2016. OB Brewery was also recognized as the “small brewpub of the year.” Last year, OB Brewery brought home silver for its Hidden Gem, a German-style wheat beer. More Gold for Gianni Buonomo
Recently, the impossible happened … gold medals have come to Gianni Buonomo from international competition for its 2013 Blaufrankisch ($39), a native of Austria and Hungary that Rolle sourced from Washington state. The other winning wine was the 2014 Charbono ($55), which won double gold from the San Francisco Chronicle show. A former Napa Valley favorite, this Charbono was sourced from El Dorado wine country near Placerville. And to top it off, San Diego Magazine recently awarded its Best Urban Winery to Gianni Bonomo. Knife Wielder at Subway Arrested
Police on Saturday, Sept. 22 took a man into custody after he allegedly brandished a knife and threatened employees in an Ocean Beach sandwich shop, an officer said. Officer John Buttle said police were called to a Subway store at 1916 Cable St. shortly before 5 p.m. The unidentified man said “hundreds of people were threatening him,” Buttle said. It was unclear whether anyone was injured or what charges the man would face. KUSI
OB Mainstreet Association Celebrates 40 Years
The Ocean Beach MainStreet Association is celebrating 40 years of being a large part of OB. Starting in 1978 with 25 members, today it has over 500. And on Oct. 5, the Culture Brewing Tasting Room (4845 Newport Ave.) will feature the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association as the “Artist of the Month,” featuring OB memorabilia and a timeline of OBMA’s growth and community involvement since 1978. That event, honoring the art itself, runs from 5 to 9 p.m. and the art will hang throughout October. The event will feature a large Ocean Beach logo photo mosaic made of hundreds of smaller photos of our beautiful neighborhood, past OBMA T-shirts, and a video presentation highlighting the milestones of the organization. sdnews.com
Gas Leak at Kaiser in the Midway
A natural gas leak Friday prompted a shelter-in-place order for around an hour at a Kaiser Permanente facility in the Midway area, officials said. The gas leak was reported shortly after 7:05 a.m. when a contractor doing excavation work ruptured a 1 1/4-inch gas line outside a Kaiser building at 3250 Fordham St., San Diego Gas & Electric spokeswoman Allison Torres said. No one was evacuated, but authorities told people in the Kaiser Permanente Point Loma Medical Offices to shelter in place, San Diego Fire- Rescue spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. No injuries were reported. Utility crews arrived on scene around 7:25 a.m. and shut off the gas around 8:05 a.m., Torres said. KUSI

Down a dirt path only accessible from the picturesque Point Loma Nazarene University, you’ll find the house Erin Corbin grew up in. “This was my bedroom,” she says, pointing to a window on the south side. “And now it’s my son’s bedroom.” Corbin says in between she’s hosted her best friend’s wedding, built mosaics in the front yard, and planted Christmas trees — all above a million dollar view of Sunset Cliffs.
