August 9th  Thursday 7 p.m.  Film night ” The Homeless Chorus Speaks”

This 2018 film is a  compelling documentary that creatively depicts a critical and timely social issue:  people living without support and shelter.  Using a unique community choir (Voices of Our City Choir,) as a vehicle to tell the stories of people suffering with homelessness, the film – like all of Susan Polis Schutz’s documentaries — effectively put s a human face on a crucial problem and makes it strikingly clear just how easily someone can end up living on the streets.” — Lauren Mills, Senior Manager, American Public Television  Trailer:  http://www.ironzealfilms.org/homeless/ Free of Charge  :-)

August 25th Saturday 1:00 p.m. Native Bee Presentation .

Ocean Beach Green Center 4843 B Voltaire St.  Ocean Beach 92107   Colorful and gentle, solitary native bees can be found all over the world. In San Diego alone we have 700 different species that live alone, do not sting or make honey, but pollinate 75% of our food. Native bees lay their eggs in a tunnel cavity, but with habitat loss and pesticide use, nest sites are scare. Join us for an in depth discussion with our friend Candace, the architect to the solo bees. She will share her solution to help the bees and together we can all make OB and San Diego a Pollinator Village. $10 donation requested and a percent of sales of native bee shelters goes to support the Ocean Beach Green Center. More info:  https://www.solobee.com/ RSVP at oceanbeachgreencenter@gmail or call 619-225-1083

August 10th   6:30 p.m. Sierra Club’s Film Night “The Garden”

8304 Clairemont Mesa Blvd #101, San Diego, CA 92111
This film depicts the history and fate of a huge community garden in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods, South Central Los Angeles.  Created as a form of healing after the L.A. riots of 1992 by mostly immigrant farmers from Latin America, this urban farm was destroyed, and the land sold to a wealthy developer by the L.A. City Council in a closed-door session.  The farmers organized and fought back, but to no avail.  The Garden raises crucial and challenging questions for Americans about liberty, equality, and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable among us.  More info:  Jean Costa 619) 463-0721
