Members of the board of the Ocean Beach Town Council are gearing up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the organization.

The first Town Council began in 1968, and the current one is looking for old photos of OB from the Sixties, Seventies – even Eighties, and especially of Newport Avenue. Like the one above of Zekes Farmhouse, formerly at the corner of Newport and Bacon.

So, if you have something – please send it to Nicole at Nicole@oceanbeachsandiego.com or drop it by the office of the Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association at 1868 Bacon Street (Nicole works there) .

As an aside, I would have Nicole and others check out the main article in this old OB Rag from March 1972:

That photo is from Newport? It vaguely looks like SuperMax, but it has a kind of Cracker Barrel fake old-timey look to it.

I hope this project will involving putting all the photos online. For ones that have locations that are clear, they can be added to Google Maps quite easily.

I also hope that pictures of Voltaire, WPL Blvd, and Sunset Cliffs businesses can be included, these seem to be even rarer than Newport photos.

Ol OB Hippie August 6, 2018 at 12:23 pm

As Tom Limbauch stated on OB Rag facebook, Zekes did not allow hippies into their store. Also someone else mentioned 2 of the young clerks who worked there would put on their Klan outfits and parade around Newport.
