San Diego’s Deputy Sheriffs Association has rescinded an earlier endorsement of former District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, the Republican candidate in the race for Fourth District Supervisor. [ Editordude: Ocean Beach and most of Point Loma are in the Fourth District.]

Former Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, the Democratic candidate, now holds the title of ‘law enforcement’s choice,’ according to a press release landing in my inbox this morning.

The Deputy Sheriff’s Association of San Diego County (DSA) today announced their endorsement of Nathan Fletcher for County Supervisor.

This major endorsement by the county’s leading law enforcement association adds massive momentum to Fletcher’s surging campaign, which has announced a string of powerful endorsements and opened up a significant fundraising advantage since Fletcher’s commanding first place finish in June’s primary.

The Deputy Sheriffs PAC funded an independent expenditure slate mailer supporting Dumanis on May 3. They donated $50,000 on May 9, and $30,000 on June 29 to the local Republican Party on June 29th. The local GOP has spent $157,000 supporting Dumanis, mostly through member communications thus far.

The handwriting on the wall for the Deputy Sheriffs Association has to be the 74% of voters in District 4 who didn’t vote for Bonnie Dumanis in the Primary. Local conservatives bet the farm on independent expenditures supporting Democrat Lori Saldaña, running as an anti-establishment candidate, hoping for an easier opponent in the fall. That bet proved to be a loser.

Miss Cleo’s fortune-telling hotline has been strangely silent for me since she died two years ago, but I can say for sure the people who normally support Republicans are acting like they’ve seen the future. This endorsement, my friends, is kind of a big deal. I know the election isn’t over until the ballots are counted, but this switcheroo was a jaw-dropper.
