Slightly Stoopid Hits the Road
Slightly Stoopid, has hit the road with its, “School’s Out for Summer” tour, in support of the band’s ninth studio album, Everyday Life, Everyday People. Often joined by other musicians on stage and in the studio, Slightly Stoopid’s new album will feature several guest appearances, including Ali Campbell (UB40), Don Carlos, Alborosie, G. Love, and Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), to name a few. Everyday Life, Everyday People was inspired by the band’s hometown of Ocean Beach/San Diego, California. Feeling the hometown vibe, Slightly Stoopid brought in renowned surf artist painter, and friend, Jay Alders, to hand paint the cover art for the album.
Slightly Stoopid’s Miles Doughty recently spoke about the new album: “We have some insane guests, childhood heroes of ours, from Ali Campbell of UB40, Don Carlos of course, Alborosie, Chali 2na from Jurassic 5, King Yellowman, G Love. … It’s been a lot of fun for us, it’s like paying tribute to the people we grew up listening to. They paved the way for so many of the young bands today playing reggae music, and those guys are at the forefront of where it all started.” Doughty added, “I think for us, at the point we are at in our lives; all of us have kids, and we’ve been touring for so long and seen so much, I think all of it is reflected in the new record (Everyday Life, Everyday People) and relates to everyone.” NYS Music
Hit and Run Driver in OB Incident Sentenced to Year in Custody
An unlicensed and uninsured motorist, who fled the scene after hitting a good Samaritan helping two people stranded in a broken-down car in Ocean Beach, was sentenced today to a year in local custody. Jaron Blake Hillyer, 27, pleaded guilty last month to felony hit-and-run causing injury. Judge Eugenia Eyherabide placed Hillyer on three years probation and told the defendant he could serve his time in a work furlough-residential re-entry program in hopes that he will get a job and start making restitution to the victim, Julio Vasquez.
Vasquez, 26, told the court that since the accident, he has trouble breathing due to a punctured lung and his broken leg will never be the same.“People call it an accident, I call it a tragedy,” Vasquez said. “I thought I was gonna die.” Vasquez said he is now working two jobs to try and make ends meet for his wife and two young children. “I lost everything,” the victim told the judge. “I lost a lot.”
Police said Hillyer left the scene after his Subaru station wagon struck Vasquez in the 2900 block of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard about midnight on April 9. Acting on a tip from the public, investigators found Hillyer’s Outback Legacy in the 4300 block of Orchard Avenue, about a mile south of the site of the crash. On May 7, the defendant turned himself in and was booked into jail, then posted $50,000 bail. Defense attorney Greg Turner said Hillyer made an “awful decision”to leave the scene of the accident, calling his client’s actions “inexcusable.” Turner said, however, that Hillyer surrendered to police once he was identified as the driver who hit Vasquez. 10News

Pt Loma Concert Series
One of San Diego’s most popular annual events, the Point Loma Summer Concerts Series, returns for its 18th season on consecutive Fridays, July 20 to Aug. 17. Taking place at Point Loma Park, up to 3,000 music fans are expected to take in performances from a wide variety of cover and tribute bands, with opening sets on the “Junior Stage,” from area groups comprised of local students. North Chapel Gets Extension
The North Chapel in Liberty Station, which was to have closed June 30, has been granted a reprieve. “While we are still actively seeking a long-term tenant to increase the use of North Chapel, we don’t yet have a lease in place,” said chapel owners Liberty Station Marketplace Investors. “So we’ve extended the agreement with our operator to make the chapel available for short-term rentals through the end of this year.” Owners added their long-term goal “is to find a use that both protects — and respects — the historic resource and allows for greater community enjoyment of the chapel.” Proposed for conversion to restaurant use due to underutilization, North Chapel has been rented out for years on Sundays by two Catholic congregations for services, weddings and special events. Former Union-Tribune Editor Moves On, Recalls His Big Day in Ocean Beach
Ex-U-T managing editor Robert York has been named editor-in-chief of the New York Daily News. …One of York’s most prominent appearances during his San Diego career was a May 2015 appearance before a packed meeting of irate Ocean Beach residents, who asserted that free plastic bag-wrapped U-T circulars being dropped throughout the neighborhood were ruinous to the environment. “The circulars should be landing in driveways and not in bushes. Tell us to opt out and we will do away with your address,” York told the audience. “I’m the guy who can remedy this. You email me if you still get it after opting out.” SD Reader
RV Owners Ask Judge to Block City Ticketing
RV owners piled into federal court Thursday, July 26, to ask a judge to stop the city from ticketing and impounding shelter vehicles. Attorneys filed a lawsuit in November 2017 saying the penalties unfairly prevent people from living in RVs or parking them at night. Thursday, that group asked a judge to put in place an injunction to stop the city’s policies until their case is settled. Ultimately, the judge said he needed more time before making a decision. Several people stood outside the San Diego courthouse, armed with signs, protesting the city’s laws. Valerie Grischy is disabled and lives in an RV. She says the city is putting a strain on her life. “I can’t afford to pay their tickets. And if you get five unpaid tickets, they can tow your vehicle, and that puts us out on the streets,” Grischy said.
Margaret Murray lives off Soto St. in Ocean Beach — a street where four RVs were parked, including one with a ticket on the windshield. She says she understands people’s pain, but RVs can become an eyesore. “If it’s one, it’s two or more.” said Murray. “You get riff-raff coming in and out and it just brings everything to a lower standard.” Fox5
OB and Pt Loma to Be Impacted by New Midway Redevelopment – Housing to Double
The front door to Ocean Beach and Point Loma is slated for a major overhaul that would make way for 10,000 new homes near jobs and transit in the Midway district. Currently, the Midway district is slightly blighted with the aging Sports Arena, industrial-heavy development, and a lack of green spaces, according to city officials. But, it is considered ripe for revitalization because of its location near the ocean, two San Diego bays and downtown. If approved, the plan would increase the area’s housing from 2,000 to more than 11,000 over the next two decades. The community plan update for the area released April 19 would more than double the homes that could be built in areas around Midway Drive, Sports Arena and the Pacific Highway Corridor north of Little Italy and make way for a similar number of jobs, according to a May 2018 staff report. 7SanDiego
Point Loma Fire Station 22 Opens
The new Fire Station 22 is located at 1055 Catalina Boulevard in on the western edge of Point Loma Community Park. It replaced the original one built in 1942. The new version has over 6,000 square feet, 2 vehicle bays with a redesigned driveway, which allows fire apparatus to get out of Catalina Boulevard. The state-of-the-art fire house has a cool TV room/ training room, a new commercial state-of-the-art kitchen with many refrigerators. And Captain Tony Jefferys grew up in the Point Loma and Ocean Beach.
OB Winery Wins in Manhattan
The heart of Midtown Manhattan is where the upstart San Diego winery Gianni Buonomo Vintners, won over the judges to earn a 94-point rating and a Gold Medal in the New York International Wine Competition. The winning wine was their 2014 Maestrale, a Meritage/Bordeaux-style blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. “Ocean Beach is a universe away from New York City. To think that our little beach winery is winning awards on the international wine stage in New York is very cool,” said Keith Rolle, owner of Gianni Buonomo Vintners, at 4836 Newport Ave. “It’s all about the grapes. Great wine comes from great grapes.”

1 in 5 Cannabis Samples Fail State Inspections
Cannabis samples undergoing laboratory testing as required by California law are failing to pass inspection, according to a published report. One in five batches of marijuana has failed the state’s safety requirements since the new regulations took effect July 1, the Orange County Register reported. Out of 5,268 batches of marijuana tested, the OCR reported that about 20 percent failed to meet the standards. The majority of those samples that failed did not meet the specific claims on their labels including the amount of THC offered, the paper said. Banned pesticides were also reportedly found in some samples. 7SanDiego

Surf Rider Pizza Co. has opened 2 new locations in Mission Beach and Crown Point. The 3770 Mission Blvd. newbie has an indoor bar, outdoor upper deck and a pet-friendly patio; with it service model mirroring the OB storefront at 2163 Abbott St., with a similar menu including whole pizzas and pizza by the slice. The full bar features beach classic cocktails, beer, and wine, and exclusively pours the original smooth citrus Himmel Brew, brewed by Mission Brewery. Local Boy Scout Troop 24 Turns 100
In September, local Boy Scout Troop 24 will celebrate its 100th year anniversary with a ceremony at MCRD. The Troop primarily serves Point Loma, Ocean Beach and other San Diego areas. The scouts have been involved in community service projects, like picking up plastic and garbage along the shores in Ocean Beach and cleaning up at the Point Loma Native Plant Garden, like delivering meals to Rachel’s House and to homeless people, and bringing new clothing and other necessities to the Veterans Village. One hundred years ago, the small troop of 11 scouts was sponsored by Loma Portal Elementary School. Today it’s sponsored by the Point Loma Presbyterian Church. Girls Allowed to Join Scout Troop in February 2019
February 2019 is the date set by the Boy Scouts of America for when girls will be allowed to join the troops. Point Loma Presbyterian Church – which sponsors local Troop 24 is now supportive. Strict rules will be in place with the addition of girls into Boy Scout troops, just as there were when the troops were solely male: There is a two-adult rule (there must be two adults present with each troop); male leaders must be assigned to boy troops, female leaders are assigned to girl troops, and girls and boys sleep in separate tent.

Midway Bank Robber Hit Another
The same man used demand notes to rob a pair of San Diego bank branches located in Vons grocery stores on consecutive days last week, according to the FBI. The first robbery, which happened about 12:15 p.m. Thursday, targeted the Wells Fargo branch inside the Vons at Scripps Poway Parkway and Spring Canyon Road in the Miramar Ranch North neighborhood, FBI Special Agent Davene Butler said. The second heist occurred about 6:45 p.m. Friday at the U.S. Bank branch inside the Vons on Midway Drive south of Sports Arena Boulevard in the Midway District, Butler said. “During each robbery, the robber provided the victim teller a note threatening an act of violence and demanding money from the bank,” Butler said. At each bank, the teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, Butler said. Officials did not disclose the nature of the threatening messages written on the not. SD U-T
Artwork Coming to Nimitz Blvd
Taiji, a 14-foot-tall kinetic sculpture by Jeffrey Laudenslager, paid for and donated by Point Loma philanthropist Dorothea Laub, will soon be installed in the Nimitz Boulevard median just south of West Point Loma Boulevard. Nonprofit PLA, which works on Peninsula beautification, has the sculpture project permit in-hand. Kinetic art is three-dimensional sculptures and figures with movable wind- or motor-driven parts, such as mobiles. “It’s not a heavy piece,” said Laudensslager about Taiji, noting it comes apart in pieces and can be relatively easily installed. “It’s a serious sculpture working on the yin-yang (complimentary opposites) principle.” Added Laudenslager, “All of my sculptures have the character of movement, which tends to be slow, deliberate and very precise.” Peninsula Beacon
