Young Man Air-Lifted from Sunset Cliffs June 14 Died From His Injuries

UPDATE: Neither the OB Rag nor our primary source can confirm the death of the man who was airlifted from Sunset Cliffs June 14

A young man who had to be air-lifted by chopper from rocks at the foot of Sunset Cliffs near Hill Street after a 30 foot fall on June 14, actually died from his injuries. He has not been publicly identified.

This is what happened, according to Julie Klein, who has chaired the Public Safety Committee for the OB Mainstreet Association for years. Usually, Julie is the one of the first to hear news from police officers and is very credible on such issues.

We had reported on June 15:

A young man had to be airlifted off the rocks at the bottom of Sunset Cliffs as he was so badly injured – on Thursday morning, June 14. The as-yet-to-be identified man was reportedly bleeding from his head from a 30 foot fall. A woman collecting shells saw him around 6:15 a.m. and called 911. She told the press the man was breathing and moved a little when sirens were heard arriving.

Lifeguards, police and firefighters responded and he was eventually airlifted off the rocks near the foot of Hill Street in Point Loma around 7 a.m. First responders performed life-saving emergency procedures as the helicopter began lifting off and he was flown to the UC San Diego Medical Center trauma unit. There is no new information about his injuries or condition.

The woman who found him … told dispatchers he appeared to be a white man in his 20s dressed in a blue sweatshirt and jeans.

Even though this young man suffered death from traumatic injuries, he is not listed on the County Medical Examiner‘s website. I spent half an hour with one of their very helpful assistants the other day trying to locate anyone of the young man’s description on their lists – but to no avail.

And despite the media’s coverage of his rescue on June 14, there was nothing in local media about him dying – or any follow-up about him for that matter. This is not unusual. For whatever reason, we do see and hear multiple local press accounts of this or that rescue or mishap in the ocean, but never any follow-up. Nothing about what happened to this or that victim.
