‘OB Shelf’ Coming to Ocean Beach Library

The OB Rag is working with the staff at the Ocean Beach Library to set up what’s being called “the OB Shelf” – a section of the library devoted solely to books and materials about OB.

Coming in the next few weeks, the OB Shelf will have books about Ocean Beach and books written or published by local authors. Matt Beatty, the head librarian, told me they already have several of those – “Beach Town” by Ruth Varney Held and Kathy Blavatt’s latest photo books about OB.

Also to be included on the shelves are planning documents on Ocean Beach and the Peninsula – that go back as far as 1967. These priceless reference materials include the original Peninsula Community Plan, the notorious original Ocean Beach Precise Plan, as well as versions of the OB Community plan published since. Some of these documents have not even been kept by the City. And the current OB Community Plan will also be available.

A number of current and past local residents have written books, like Dianne Lane and David Helvarg. Other authors have penned books about OB, like Jim Miller. Copies of their works need to be included on the OB Shelf. Plus books with references to OB – like one of the last books by Herbert Marcuse (the German-born giant of modern philosophy who taught at UCSD) are a must.

So, a call is going out. If you know of or have books and other materials written about OB or by OBceans, current and past, please pass them on or info about them to Matt at the OB Library.

Ha, I just checked out (and read/re-read) half the cited titles…I’ll have to go back next month to grab some more!
