Demonstrations by kite flying professionals from all over SoCal

OB Kite Festival has a new location!

The 70th annual Ocean Beach Kite Festival – that’s right, the 70th – is moving to a new and bigger venue this year. The traditional free event will now be held at Robb Field on Saturday, May 12, from 10 am to 4 pm.

The new Robb Field location will give everyone more room to fly their kites, as well as lots of free parking.

Children will learn how to make and fly a simple kite, with all materials and instruction included.

There’s also food, music (from OB’s own Beer Feat band), jumpies, and a craft fair. Prizes for the best decorated kites are donated by Lighthouse Ice Cream.

A highlight of the event is spectacular demonstrations by kite flying professionals from all over Southern California. They will perform beautiful kite ballets and kite-based games like “Catch the Tail” and the eagerly awaited “Candy Drop”. The demonstrations start about 11 am and run until about 3 pm; the actual times are dependent on the wind.

The Kite Festival is put on as a free event for families by the Kiwanis Club of Ocean Beach.

It is believed to be the oldest kite festival for children in the United States. It is now in its third generation; people who came to the Kite Festival as children are now bringing their kids and grandkids. One of the current organizers of the event actually participated in the very first Kite Festival as a young child.
