A woman in her twenties was found on the Ladera Street stairs bleeding from gunshot wounds around 7 Thursday morning. A passerby found her and called police.
Firefighters rushed the victim to the UC San Diego Medical Center’s trauma unit for treatment, who was initially listed in critical condition, but by 11:30 a.m., she had undergone surgery and was in stable condition.
She was conscious when police arrived and with multiple wounds to her head and lower body. She initially claimed she didn’t know what had happened or who had shot her. Later news reports stated the young woman was shot by someone she knew – that she had been targeted – but police could not reveal by whom or why.
Meanwhile, police investigators are combing the neighborhood in the southern Sunset Cliffs area for any witnesses.
The Ladera Street stairs are supposed to be closed off due to erosion and cracks in nearby cliffs. The stairs lead from the top of the bluff down to rocks, tide pools and the surf below.

Maybe ask officer Richard Butera? He seems to have a penchant for firing fatally, and we’ve heard very little about his fatal wounding of the mentally ill person, Kyle Zahacefski, last December.
This is obviously a specious comment, and I sincerely hope this woman recovers from whomever her “known” assailant was, but any shooting in OB brings me back to the unanswered questions about this police officer…I’m sure it was not him, but gives me the segue to ask about the follow up regarding him? Where’s that cam recording?
Bonnie Dumanis, while DA, exonerated the officer; now she’s running for the County Supervisor seat that has jurisdiction over OB and the Midway.
That is a difficult connection. Please. I bet there is a whole drama behind this shooting and we’ll read about it weeks or months down the calendar. Hopefully she recovers and the shooter is caught. And stay off the stairs!
