Imam Taha Hassane currently serves as the imam of the Islamic Center of San Diego. Hassane graduated from the Institute of Islamic Sciences at the University of Algiers in his native Algeria. He served as a high school teacher and imam in Tenes, Algeria for 10 years before coming to the United States. In the U.S., he served as a youth counselor with the Colorado Muslim Youth Foundation. In addition to his regular duties at ICSD, he provides marriage and family counseling, youth programming and Islamic educational services. Hassane holds a Masters of Theology in Islamic Studies from the Graduate Theological Foundation in South Bend, Ind.
Imam Taha will address some misconceptions about Islam and how everyone can combat Islamophobia.

Jerry Cano has used his power as an elected member of National City Council to shield himself from paying fines associated with code violations at his house. Jerry had illegally constructed a backyard patio, kitchen, etc. without pulling any permits and without any code inspection. While all residents are held accountable for code violations with fines, red tag and even direction to tear down their houses. Jerry was treated differently and hasn’t paid any fines since 2013. Additionally the code violations are still outstanding and nothing has been done to make Jerry address his code violations. Jerry shouldn’t get special treatment! If I had paid a fine, I would want a refund. This is a clear case of Abuse of Power.

Our featured speaker will be Rebecca Schwartz Lesberg, Project Manager of San Diego Audubon‘s ReWild Mission Bay. “After years of governmental inaction, and following a collaboration between Audubon California and San Diego Audubon to develop a Conservation Plan for Mission Bay in 2011, San Diego Audubon launched the “ReWild Mission Bay” campaign in 2014. The goal of ReWild Mission Bay is to restore up to 200 acres of healthy, resilient wetlands in northeast Mission Bay so wildlife and communities can thrive.” With Mayor Faulconer’s office and the Mission Bay Park Committee signaling an inclination toward monetizing a large portion of the project footprint, there is a pressing need to inform ourselves and our communities about the social and ecological importance of the ReWild Project and to prepare ourselves to fight for our threatened public lands.
We will be considering endorsements in the San Diego County District 5 Supervisorial and Superior Court races. We will also vote on consent for the friendly incumbent endorsement of Michael McQuary for re-election to District C of the San Diego Unified School District’s Board of Education. We will close with a discussion of our Club’s participation in San Diego’s Earth Fair 2018 on April 22nd at Balboa Park, where we will host our endorsed candidates, elected officials, and other environmental leaders at our booth on Prado-East.
