There’s two new books about Ocean Beach coming out this week. One is about OB’s past and the other is about OB’s future.
Kathy Blavatt’s newly released book “Ocean Beach- Where Land and Water Meet“, will premier at the Ocean Beach Historical Society on this Thursday, and Jim Miller will present his new release and read from his “Last Days in Ocean Beach” at the Ocean Beach Green Center on Friday. Book Premier “Ocean Beach Where Land and Water Meet”, By Kathy Blavatt,Thurs. April 19th
Kathy Blavatt & Arcadia Publishing’s newly released book ‘Ocean Beach- Where Land and Water Meet’, will premier at the Ocean Beach Historical Society Program. The author will talk about how water defines Ocean Beach by its unique location where the Pacific Ocean meets the mouth of the San Diego River, alongside Mission Bay (False Bay), which connected to marsh tidal areas.
She will talk about the history and fabric of our unique ocean community, made up of an assortment of characters, and spirited generations of individuals, who have left their loving mark through their homes, gardens, businesses, stories, achievements, and community activities. All of this with beautiful rarely seen photos

About the Author
Kathy Blavatt is a long-time OB and Point Loma activist – who once ran for City Council-; she’s the author of a number of books about Ocean Beach with Aracadia. Kathy has been following in the footsteps of other well-known historians of OB, like Ruth Varney Held and Carol Bowers. She and her husband Ray have also been instrumental in their volunteer work with the OB Historical Society. They own their home in south OB.
Book Release: “Last Days in Ocean Beach”- By Jim Miller, Friday, April 20th
The Ocean Beach Green Center is hosting Jim Miller, author, teacher and activist. He will read from his new novel that deals with climate change that is based in our community of Ocean Beach.
“Last Days in Ocean Beach” is the story of William, a scientist working at the Center for Extinction Studies, a think tank at the College of the Sun funded by a green billionaire. William desperately works to raise the alarm about climate change and its dire consequences to an apathetic public, learns to live with grief, and hold on to love. Along the way, we meet the residents of his wonderfully shabby apartment complex in Ocean Beach–bikers, hippies, skate punks, adventure tourists, reggae singers, aimless young professionals, Iraq war veterans, decadent retirees, a hospice nurse, and a Buddhist monk, all of whom are searching for something, looking to live more fully. Last Days in Ocean Beach is a blues song moaning and rocking the beach party at the end of the world.

About the Author
Jim Miller is a native San Diegan and teaches English and Labor Studies at San Diego City College where he is the director of the San Diego City College Literary Center, a founding member of the San Diego Writers Collective, co-founder of San Diego City Works Press. Miller is the co-author of the radical history of “San Diego Under the Perfect Sun: The San Diego Tourists Never See” (with Mike Davis and Kelly Mayhew). He has published poetry, fiction, and non-fiction in a wide range of journals and other publications. A proud union member, Jim serves on the executive board of AFT local 1931 and does political action work. Jim Miller lives in Golden Hill with his wife and son.
