Trump San Diego

The President of the United States is coming to one the safest cities in the United States to complain about crime and immigration. No doubt he’ll echo this weekend’s Saturday address expressing his unhappiness with California’s defiant stance on cooperation with federal authorities:

“California’s leaders are in open defiance of federal law,” Mr. Trump said. “They don’t care about crime. They don’t care about death and killings. They don’t care about robberies. They don’t care about the kind of things that you and I care about.”

Whatever. Here’s what we know as of Monday morning. (I’ll update as needed)

The Official Agenda: President Donald Trump will fly into Miramar Marine Corps Air Station on Tuesday morning, sometime between 9 and 11am. He’ll make a late morning/mid-day appearance at the site of the Border Wall prototypes in Otay Mesa, returning to Miramar to make a speech before TV cameras at 2pm.

An evening fundraiser –$35,000 for the cheap seats– is scheduled in Beverley Hills, hosted by Republican power broker Elliott Broidy, who is now reportedly in the sights of special counsel Robert Mueller.

The Protests: There are seven anti-Trump protests set for San Diego on Monday and Tuesday. Three of the groups are aiming to be in the vicinity of Trump’s border stop, three groups are slated for downtown locations, and a Monday mid-day press conference will be held in Chicano Park.

Indivisible chapters and associated groups have purchased time on an electronic billboard near the Tijuana border crossing, which will feature an image of the Statue of Liberty with the slogan “Higher than Any Wall.”

The nativist San Diegans for Secure Borders has announced a pro-Trump rally near the wall prototypes on Tuesday morning.

The Local Government Response: The County of San Diego has announced Temporary Area Restrictions in the area near the Border Wall prototypes thru March 16.

Via NBC7:

“In preparation for demonstrations and in an effort to protect the rights of citizens to peacefully protest, the Sheriff has requested and been granted ‘Temporary Area Restrictions,'” the SDSO statement read.

People will be unable to bring firearms, knives, pepper spray, shields, poles and several other items near the prototype area during the President’s visit and parking will be limited. For a list of what items will not be allowed, click here.

Finally, from the Los Angeles Times:

Trump has at times tried to comfort himself with the notion that the state’s protesters and its courts, which have ruled against him on significant immigration issues, stand apart from other Americans and other judges.

Barry Bennett, a former political advisor to Trump, said, “Never in history have the political beliefs in California versus the rest of the nation been so different.”

Yet much of the nation, when it comes to Trump, is siding with Californians. The president’s popularity is above 50% in only 12 states, according to the polling organization Gallup. In California, just 22% of voters approved of the job Trump was doing as president in a USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll in November; 66% disapproved. That suggests a significant loss of support even from his dismal election showing, though two-thirds of Republicans remain supportive.

I’m sorry my city is being disrupted by this monster. I’d prefer simply to ignore him. Let it all pass – like a bad wind.

This abomination to humanity is not welcome in California. He’s a disgrace to the office of the presidency and the human race.

Will there be an opportunity to meet the President or get a photo with him.
This may not be a popular opinion in this area, but I am a big fan of the President and (the majority, not all) of his policies.

Yes, there is an opportunity. Go to Beverly Hills tonight and cough up $250,000. But since you’re such a big fan, I’m sure you’ve already bought your ticket to the dinner.
