The County’s Water Quality Advisory for the Ocean Beach Pier – south to Narragansett – has been lifted.
But the Advisory for Dog Beach has not and is still in effect.
Both were in effect due to high bacterial levels that may exceed health standards – and people were /are warned to avoid water contact in the advisory areas.
And now Advisories due to high bacterial levels have been added for
- the Shelter Island shore in Point Loma and for
- the Lawrence Street area, 100 feet south and 200 feet north – which appears to include the southern end of Kellogg Beach

Dog beach is contaminated by dog poop, what are the problems in other areas? Marine paint is known to be toxic, containing lead, copper, or zinc.
Based on DNA studies conducted in previous years at Dog Beach, 2/3rds of the pollution is from birds, and nothing can be done about it. In wet weather pollution from human waste from the 51 miles of the San Diego River east of Dog Beach accounts for some pollution (have you seen recent photos of the cleanups needed along the riverbed in Mission Valley???). Dogs account for a small amount of pollution resulting from owners who don’t or won’t pick up after their pets. Since 1998 when Dog Beach Dog Wash began supplying more than 10,000 free poop bags a week at Dog Beach, and hundreds of volunteers have helped cleanup Dog Beach on a monthly basis (every 2nd Saturday, 9 to 11 am), Dog Beach has received an A rating from Heal the Bay for cleanliness and very low pollution.
It’s still a good idea to avoid contact with the water for 3 days after a rain, since all the pollution in storm drains and the river find their way downstream to Ocean Beach.
There are loose dogs at Kellogg Beach. The rich of Point Loma & plenty of other people have turned that delicate beach into little more than a dog run. Probably dog poop in the water or canine fecal matter going out with the tide is upping bacteria levels.
