The OB Rag’s Winter Fund Raising Campaign – Help Us Raise $1,000 Over the Next Week

Over the last several years, the OB Rag has hosted two fund-raising drives – one in the summer and one in the winter. And thanks to our readers and supporters, they’ve all been successful – we’ve always met our goals and then some.

Well, we’re at it again.

Starting today, Friday, December 29th, 2017th, we’re doing our Winter fund-raising drive, which will go to next weekend, January 6th – 7th in 2018, and we’re asking our friends to help us reach $1,000.

We have managed to survive and thrive these last ten years – we just held our 10th Anniversary Celebration in late October – and truly and thankfully, we have done it only because of the outpourings from the folks who have stood by us over this last decade.

So, please – you can donate safely online with our PayPal button at the top right of our home page.

Or you can send us a check to our Post Office box at the OB Post Office on Santa Monica Avenue. Here’s our address:

Imagine, ten years as the online newspaper for Ocean Beach and Point Loma. We’ve tried to keep it local and independent.

Yet, despite it all – we’re still in the Time of Trump – and we’re the citizen journalists whom Trump has lumped into the press category and called all of us “the enemy of the people.”

And once again, it’s time to support your local and independent press – the OB Rag.

Back in the old days, during the 1970s when the OB Rag was an actual paper newspaper, the staff would leave stacks of the folded issues on counters in storefronts and businesses across OB, and on top of each stack was a large coffee can with a sign for donations.

And no one would touch the contents of those cans. In large measure, that’s how the OB Rag survived in those days – through contributions from residents and businesses of the community.

Likewise today, the online OB Rag – now in our 11th year – has survived, as we have said, on donations from our readers, supporters and businesses who take out ads.

It’s how we roll.

So, we’re asking our friends to step up and again help us with contributions in order to cover our costs.

Here’s some reasons for keeping us alive:

Here’s why OB needs the OB Rag – just from recent coverage:

  • The attention and analysis given to local issues is like none other, such as
  • short-term vacation rentals,
  • progress of OB and Point Loma developments,
  • gentrification,
  • The controversial Ebers – Greene Project;
  • We covered the campaign to save the Torrey Pine on Saratoga Avenue – which was unsuccessful; we’re supporting folks in the Friends of Peninsula Trees and their efforts to have all OB’s Torrey pines designated Heritage Trees.
  • We helped shed light on the Point Loma project at Emerson and Evergreen.
  • We continue our vigilance on the issue of the 30-foot height limit and watch for threats.
  • The OB Rag continues to be a thorn in the side of SeaWorld – recently criticizing their move to beautiful the exterior of the  Orca’s tanks without enlarging them.
  • We provide coverage of some of the more community-oriented public meetings, such as the OB Town Council and the OB Planning Board – and the other Peninsula planning committees.
  • We support small and local businesses with our continued series of “News on Newport Avenue”, and keep residents up on the comings and goings of local merchants.

Again, How to Support Us

So, help us keep the OB Rag alive and well – send us a donation during this Summer campaign.

The original OB Rag was first published in the fall of 1970 – and we’re still here 48 years later – okay there’s been some gaps – but with your help, we’d like to be for a while longer.

Keep it up Frank! We may not agree on everything, but a bit of civil discourse is essential to a functional democracy. We will get back there.
