On  Sunday, December 18th, a young bearded man stood at the corner of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Santa Monica – right in front of the OB Library and right across the street from Ocean Beach Elementary – pulled his pants down, exposing himself, and puffed on a pipe.

This outrageous behavior by the guy who looks to be homeless has pushed a bunch of OBceans over the edge and now some are calling for increased security for OB Elementary.

Danielle Wolcott was driving by and came to a stop at the light – and then realized what the guy – who has yet to be identified – was doing. She recorded the incident.  Wolcott told 10News:

“It’s pretty scary when you see something like that. Seeing someone so young just kind of so unstable was a little concerning.”

10News reported:

10News put Wolcott in touch with a sergeant from the San Diego Police Department, who wanted to hear more details so they could find and arrest the man. A spokesperson for the police department said the man will likely face indecent exposure charges, and the courts could force him to register as a sex offender.

One of those locals who decided this was enough is Nicole Ueno, who sits on the OB Town Council Board. This incident has added to a growing number of indecent exposure acts around OB, and now Nicole is attempting to raise funds for a private security team to patrol around the school.  Ueno told 10News:

“You know, I think I’m the third generation in my family to grow up here in Ocean Beach. And it makes me really sad and just afraid to raise my kids here too.”

Partnering with the non-profit at OB Elementary called “Catch the Wave”, Ueno has started a gofundme page and made the following statement:

Security for Ocean Beach Elementary

It’s sad that it’s come to this. The increase in drug-addicted and mentally ill transients in our community has led to an increase in the number of indecent exposure incidents happening around our beloved Ocean Beach Elementary School.

The San Diego Police Department has been underfunded for years, and simply does not have the manpower to properly patrol the area. That is why I am asking the Ocean Beach community to come together and donate funds to secure a private security company that would primarily be focused on policing the area around the OB Elementary School and the OB Library.

Please donate whatever you can – if every person in our neighborhood gave just $5, we would have enough to hire a security prescence to keep our children and residents safer.  All funds will go directly to the OBE non-profit, “Catch the Wave” and are therefore tax-deductible.  OB is a strong and closely-knit community, and I have faith that if we work together, we can get this done!

Thank you so much for your support.

As of this writing, the page has raised $645 of their $3,000 goal.

Fortunately, for everyone around, this incident occurred on a Sunday. And the school is now closed for the holidays.

But – what about school security? Doesn’t the School District have its own security? Of course, they do – and this reporter called the School District security and media phone numbers – but they’re all closed until January 2nd.

We have a few more questions – which will probably have to wait until we’re out of holiday-mode.

Anyone with additional information please call the San Diego Police Department Western Division at 619-531-2000.
