Steve Breen is at it again.
Breen, the San Diego Union-Tribune’s op-ed cartoonist, just couldn’t resist another attempt to disparage Ocean Beach with his cartoon in today’s paper.
Bouncing off the genuine news about a UFO, Breen stuck to his guns aimed at our community. Making fun of OB has been a favorite pastime of Breen and some of his editors/ publishers (remember Doug Manchester?) This is not the first time – by far.
Breen and the paper did it again back in 2014.
The cartoon did bring memories up of Clint Cary, OB’s Spaceman.

I think it’s funny.
Sure, it’s funny, but considering all the times Breen and the U-T make fun of OB, it’s kind of sobering. They just can not get over themselves about how they feel about our town.
The ability to laugh at yourself is a sign of self confidence and strength. The obverse is also true. Is that flu-bug affecting your humor ?
You know, the first time OB was made fun of in one of his cartoons was funny, but after a while, when they keep coming, the fun wears off, and it becomes insulting, dismissive.
I think they would fit in better. We have a positive vibe that is attractive and welcoming. Besides, they need a short term vacation rental and we have plenty.
OB abounds with alien creatures. More are welcome.
Comic is funny and let’s be honest-spot on. Sounds like author is holding a grudge from three years ago.
Let’s just say I still have a memory. Somebody’s got to have some kind of “community-institutional memory” – also see my other response, the first time is funny, but after ….
Did I miss something? Has the UT suddenly become relevant again? Who the hell cares what a cartoonist thinks about OB? Those who know and love OB should chuckle about the potential of alien tourists (I think I spotted a CANADIAN the other day ;-)
Not to flog the horse, but this diss is not by any cartoonist, but by the main OP-Ed cartoonist of the only daily paper in this horsetown.

I believe that a political cartoonist is by definition editorializing. I have watched the UT becoming less and less relevant over the last 20 years. When the North County Times folded, and the LA Times ended the San Diego edition they became the only game in town and just stopped trying hard. In my opinion the content is pretty bland and unimaginative.
Ocean Beach has always been a welcoming city (or division of the larger less welcoming one) and I am sure they would be most welcome (however they might manifest, whether they do or don’t actually exist) than in Coronado, La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, and other “jewels” of our fair city! Bring them on, I always yearned to be a Richard Dryfus clone anyway as relating to close encounters of the THIRD kind.
Seems like it should just be taken with a grain of salt.
Frank bringing this to light gives us the chance to positively shine. I visited Coronado yesterday for a skateboard session and along their shore I found plenty of trash including a wedding dress and clown pants. The only thing different is our attitudes. The rest is make believe. Well, and the $10 bucks I had to pay to get into the skateboard park and the long contract I had to sign before I gained entry but yeah, make believe, sure that sounds good.
Oh jeez, lets just keep doing what we do best and shine bright. We don’t want too many people, we want just enough, but not too few. We don’t want them we want those. You know. The song remains the same. We are us and they are them. The same could be said about Point Loma but I’ve met some real nice people who are down to Earth from PL too. Perspective is key. Embrace them all with love and kindness. Maybe draw something nice of Coronado like a perfect ice skating rink for SpaceX to land on?
P.S. I’m just being silly here. I wouldn’t want anyone to read to deep into my musings.
